You'll need to go completely back to stock exhaust-wise if you want a guaranteed pass on a smog check.
BTW, what's causing you to live O'ahu? Believe me, it's a lot nicer in Honolulu than San Francisco

What year is your car? I have an 03, so I have three cats on my car (up-pipe, down-pipe, and mid-pipe). The smog test here are really strict. You will need to have everything back to stock or they will fail you. It isn't that the guys testing your car are jerks, they can get into a heap load of trouble because they are licensed by the state. When I say everything back to stock, I mean everything. You have a blow-off valve on your car, put the stock bypass valve back on. You have intercooler hoses, put the stock ones back on. Even though something like the intercooler hoses most likely wouldn't affect your emissions, they may cause you to fail the visual inspection. Also, make sure your car is nice and warm before you start the testing so that your cats are warmed up. Don't try and get by with what you have, because if you fail, then your car will be classified as a polluter and you will have all kinds of crap to go through.

Mainland WRX's also come straight from Japan, but even though they're from Japan they aren't JDM. I'm quite sure that WRX's in Hawai'i have three cats just like all other USDM models (but if you want to be sure, try asking gdogg about it -- he works for Windward Subaru). Thus, if you bring it back to stock like when you bought her from the dealership, you'll be fine.
Oh and BTW, Maui sucks!!!! If I weren't on Oahu, I'd be on the Big Island

I just went through this process:
1)Put stock downpipe back
2)Take out any Cel-Eliminator you might have on the car
3)Drive car to local smog-station
4)Pay the cost to have the test done ($50-$80 depending on location)
5)Pray they dont inspect for an uppipe cat (if its replaced)
6)the test will be sent directly to DMV
7)Go to DMV for Visual Inspection
8)Pay for registration (mine was $193 for an 02 WRX)
9)turn in out-of-state plates for the Cali plates
P.S. Have fun waiting in line at the DMV!!

My WRX was a special order car assembled to my list of options (exterior color, interior options) in Japan but is pretty much like any other USDM-spec car with three cats (one in the uppipe, two in the turbo back).

Hey goingsxr, pardon the directness, but what the heck are you talking about? The cars in Japan have cats on them too, and the cars in Hawaii are built to USA spec. Period, end of story. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to bring it to California.
If I were you I'd just sell the car in Hawaii and pick up a used on in Cali, but whatever floats your boat...
Whether you have to pay tax or not depends on how long ago you bought the car, IIRC.
