I was thinking Christmas morning or something small. Definitely not going to be on the front page with a banner saying "SHE SAID NO" on it. I hope she doesnt, but like you said, just in case.

This is NOT the case in CA. CA officially got rid of common law marriage in 1895 and is possibly the only state that wont recognize a common law marraige from another state (as a result of Prop 22, but it hasnt been tested in court). Common law marraiges can only be contracted in: Alabama, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, New Hampshire (posthumously), Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah.

I do agree, just saying a lot of people stay in the relationship to change the other person. i have seen it my entire life and people stay in there and stick around to fix the problem.
