How hard is it to weld a damn exhaust flange?

So I have a Cobb CBE that tapers down to 2.5" and I want to have a 3" flat flange welded on in its place. The first shop I went to made it seem like it was some weird request and kind of kept going back and forth whether or not he could do it. The second shop was like "well from what it sounds like, I'd have to see the system to even know if it'd be feasible."

Its welding on a damn flange!

well you will most likely have to have them cut the pipe where it starts the taper and weld on more 3" pipe in it's place and then fit the flange, but of course this should be obvious. Maybe they are not thinking of that and think you want them to stick a 3" flange on a 2.5" pipe?

maybe thats what they think I mean. I went downstairs and looked and the Cobb CBE goes from 3" to 2.5" back to 3" for the donut gasket. That means all they need to supply is the 3" piping and someone that can weld

Its usually best to just take the part there and show them exactly what you mean. A lot of those guys won't get it until they see it

that's weird these shops are giving you problems. it's not a big deal at all. i plan to do the same to my greddy sp2 here pretty soon, i already have the gasket, 3'' ss piping, flange, mig welder, just need to get some ss wire and a bottle of tri-mix for the welder so it will weld stainless. if mine goes well, i'd be down to help you out with yours. where are you located VRT MBasile?

Make sure they weld it on straight. I've seen some "custom" ones like this that look like /\ when you bolt them up.

Our 3" borla adapters would work for flanges

That's why I <3 my Borla XR-1 came with the 3" adapter flange on it, well the original owner bought it with the original 2.5" flange taht came with it.

Best thing to do is take the part and have them put the car on the lift and show them what and where you want it cut and rewelded. Good luck with your 3" flange.

Oh don't worry, the work wont be paid for until it actually bolts up correctly

I was thinking of getting the borla flange but there is also I dent about a foot down the pipe I want replaced too, so it'll be about a foot of piping plus the flange. I actually have the borla on my car right now and the guy looked at it and said "well cant I just chop that off?" but I kind of want that on there so I can sell the borla for more $$

I measured and the flange that is on it is actually 3" but the piping still tapers down to 2.5"

All this trouble to make a small section of 2.5" piping go up to 3" at this point you have to ask yourself if it is wothwhile to spend all this time, effort and money to make it al work? Seriously will a slight 2.5" taper really affect the flow/power or your car overall??? I am just guessing but if you do not have PnP stock manifold/aftermarket header and a aftermarket up pipe and aftermarket dp on there you will not need the 3" piping that you are missing like all of 1 1/2" worth if that. Someone please correct my if I went way off track here
