I have spanked a few m3's in my TR but it was tuned with a catback and down pipe. One was the x boss... Next day at work was fun! He claimed not be be on it..... But I had the windows down and could hear the engine scream.. He sold it few weeks later.. got a SUV..
Torque and AWD FTW
downpipe / catback Stock air filter / stock TD04
Since then adding a few more stages it really easy. Still on the OEM 5 Speed

I witnessed this twice tonight... The TR is stock sans a cat back (does no hp increase really and a panel filter replacement) Not only did the WRX hang with the M3, it actually beat it in 1/4, two times, two diff drivers. The M3 had to have been SMG (Sorry, big n00b when it comes to BMW)
This isn't the first time I've seen this phenomenon... I own an 06' TR with similar mods and have outpaced M3's (E46)... All I had at the time was a high flow filter and a borla hush cat back... (5speed).

Of course, the M3 requires that you go to basically redline to make the power, just like S2ks or other high-revving NA cars. If the driver was short shifting at 6k instead of 8k then that would have produced the results you saw... and the M3 requires more finesse on the launch... but assuming it's an SMG car and he was using launch control that shouldn't have been a variable.

I'd also say that a WRX (with awd and a pretty easy drive train) can make a mediocre driver look good. Where as an m3 takes a lot more skill to drive and a mediocre driver will look, well, mediocre.
