home theater guru's

Hey I use my PS3 for blurays and also download them to my desktop media center which is hooked up to my tv..

problem is with both downloaded blurays and ps3 played ones the sound is NEVER balanced. I have a 5.1 home theater system with the PS3 and desktop connected to it with optical cable..

why does it always seem that parts of movies where they are just talking it's very quiet, and parts where action is happening it's insanely loud.

how do i fix this? if i can..

Is your 5.1 system level balanced and set for the correct playback mode? if not- either the playback is set for stereo or the center channel is turned down from what it should be, that would explain it- since dialog is routed primarily to the center screen channel

Dynamic Range. It's actually something that many enthusiast want. Most of the time the higher the quality audio, the greater the dynamic range. You see this very often with Lossless Audio like TrueHD and DTS-HD, but it can be found in modern iterations of compressed audio like Dolby Digital and DTS from a bluray (which is what you are hearing if you are using optical), which should be around 1.5Mbps audio bitrate. TrueHD and DTSHD usually runs around 7-11 Mbps, so you can see there is a LOT more info in there.

A lot of modern home theater AVRs like my Onkyo NR-3007 have active EQ that makes sure the quiet moments aren't too quiet and the highs aren't too loud. But many people don't want dynamic range compression, but many do. i'd have to say that most do however.

So, how you fix it? See if you have a way to enable some sort of dynamic range compression in your AVR, if you are bitstreaming the audio that is. If you used HDMI to your AVR you could output PCM audio, and maybe the PS3 would have some sort of dynamic range compression feature. (Our bluray players do, but not sure about the PS3.)

I hope that was clear enough.

I have a feeling it's not channel trim because he said dialogue is low sometimes and action is too loud sometimes. I think it's in the content.

I'd go in and check the AFD and soundfield settings, my bet is one or both of those are not correct for the program material you are running

Pg 34 of your manual. D.RANGE COMP. Set it to COMP. MAX, and it should remap the audio to something more acceptable for you.

go find a DVD/BD disk with a test tone.

go borrow/steal/buy a cheapie SPL meter from radio shack.

then run the test tone with the meter and make sure the values for each speaker is the same.

that way you balance you speaker setup throughout. i would not use the test tones from the receiver cause if something is wrong with the unit itself, it might not be giving out the proper levels...

one of the SPL meter apps on the i-phone will do in a pinch... as long as the level you are working at is below 100dB
