If both bullets reach the same distance above, it doesn't matter if its show or dropped, basic physics at play here, they both hit the ground at the same time...
Just as if a bowling ball and a tennis ball were dropped from a mile high, they would both hit the ground at the same time.
If wind wasn't a factor, a car and a feather would fall at the same rate too

Gravity is fun isn't it? In a vacuum ANYTHING and EVERYTHING will fall at the same rate. Add fluid/air resistance and dynamic movements into the equation and things can definitely change drastically. It seems this problem is just meant to showcase the basic physics concept that things fall at the same rate no matter their lateral velocity.

I'm thinking along the lines of this...rotation of the fired bullet creates some aerodynamic properties that keep it up in the air a bit longer. Probably the time is minimal at best though

but that's why i asked if the rifle had a scope. and how far the target is.'
'
the reason is, that when shooting a rifle, especially when the target is far away... say 500+ meters, the bullet actually flies upwards to compensate for the gravity effect.

take a look at that pdf file. on the right side is the TRAJECTORY TABLES. so if you look at the 7mm REMINGTON section, you'll note that a 200 yards, the value is 0. so that means that the rifles was "zeroed" at 200 yards. but look at the 500 yards. note the -31 to -39" values. that means by the time the bullet has travelled 500 yards, it would have drop from 31 inches to 39.
so if you zeroed the rifle to hit the target at 500 yards, when the bullet leaves the rifle, it goes UP. somewhere around 200-300 yards, the bullet will start it's downward travel so by the time it travels 500 yards, it should have hit the target.
but since the bullet had to rise and then drop, going back to the OPs original question, the bullet dropped by hand would hit the ground first...
the diff would be even more if the target to be hit is around 1000 yards since the bullet will have to go on an upward trajectory MORE than 500 yards.

Define terms please-
is the "unfired bullet" just the projectile? or because it is "unfired", does it include the casing, charge and primer?
(either way, the answer is probably really close to "they both hit at the same time"- one would have a hard time proving or disproving any answer since the two events will take place so far away from each other)

I meant 139gr SST.

shagginwagon is probably "close enough" with his 1500 feet- maybe give or take a hundred or so, but again "it depends" on several factors, like how does this specific projectile behave as it goes transonic- the rifling of the barrel and a few other parameters will have a small influence on how drag effects the lateral velocity and thus the distance it will travel.

7MM Rem Mag 139 gr. SST
Code:
MUZZLE 100 yds 200 yds 300 yds 400 yds 500 yds -1.5 1.1 0 -5.4 -15.8 -31.8
probably somewhere between 502 to 510 yards.
