Nothing new - it's also illegal to have tires/wheels stick out past the fenders

welcome to the mini truck days in CA

tires past the fenders, and my all time favorite, exceeding the GVWR of the tires compared to the vehicle

Sorry but that is a misuse of that vehicle code and I'd fight it. PERIOD.

The vehicle code clearly says... blah blah blah b.s. blah blah.. that projects beyond the tread of the traction surface of the tire.

is the side wall the traction surface of the tire?

They used to pop peeps back in the 90s for running setups like in the picture below. This was very common for a few years. Then peeps started to get tickets left and right for it till they installed a clear plexi "guard", a fender flare of sorts.

A friend with a lifted truck got a ticket a couple of years ago for his wheels too. they said he had to install a wider mud flap in the back to cover the width of the tire.

Time for the stance people to fix their stance.

Exactly!!! Run as wide of a wheel and tire as you can safely and call it a day, if you want to go wider get some flares.

245's on my 17x9's was plenty of rubber. I had full 100% traction in the straights (unlike my 04 BBS's with stock potenzas). Anything bigger than 245's either your taking turns super hard or you have the massive 2.5L torque i never had

My favorite is 255/35-18 with 18x8.5 35mm offset. Functional, wide, pushes tire towards fender without going past it.

+35 is too low. The optimal offset functionally for that size on a street/light track duty car is +45 to +50.
