Help me find a good "compromise" tire for bay area roads, please! :)

well, its either taking all of Niles canyon road to 680, then to 580 west into Oakland
OR
Take 2 miles of Niles Canyon road to Polameras RD that cuts right into 580, it saves me a good 15-20 mins by bypassing the rest of Niles Canyon, all of 680 and a good portion of 580.
Takes me a little over an hour to get to work if I take 680 -> 580
Takes me 40-45mins by taking Polameras RD to 580.
Not only that, but taking the canyon roads is SO MUCH more fun. Polameras is 10 miles long, I get through it anywhere from 10-13 mines depending on how quick Im moving.

If that's the case, I'd take Mission blvd to foothill blvd to 580! Have you tried that already? You'd get a lot better tire wear!
Yeah, Proxes4 or the ZE-912

I tried the 512's gagan.
HATED them.
I thought they were complete and utter garbage in anything but rain. Snow terrible. dry terrible. Etc. Not to mention they wore WAY faster than they should have. I don't think mine lasted over 20k.
just my experience. Couple other folks on here LOVED them.

I can personally vouch for the Proxes4. Christian likes them, says they are damn good in the dry for a cheap all-season.

i bought some 06 wrx wheels, that had 205 Falken 452 tires that i ended up keeping on because they were very nice for a 205.
i love my 225 050's, but they are only good for an extra 10mph. I'll buy them when another sale comes or when i start to autoX again
i love 205's in the rain, rally slides all over

If you liked your S-03s but want something cheaper and longer lasting I would recommend the Kumho Ecsta MX maximum performance summer tire. I wouldn't drive it in the snow but my set were cheap and lasted really well.

I always liked my Pirelli M+S tires, either P7000's or PZero Nero's, got good life out of them too. Plus if you ever go up to Tahoe no need for chains and you still get decent grip.

I don't have the same credentials, but I'll add another +1 on the Proxes 4s. Very versatile; didn't feel the need to get true summer tires until I started auto-x.

the pzero neros are great and they can get you into the snow and through winter just fine.
I've heard good things about the AGX's as well. Justin uses those and likes them. Wear is up over 400.
I am at the end of a set of Proxe 4's. I felt it was a good middle of the road tire. Don't tram too bad. Not noisy. Wore nice and even and lasted me longer than any other set of tires has. Great in the rain. O.k. in the snow and o.k. on dry. I'd say a level below the pzeros in everything but maybe rain. I run about 25% of my commute on curvy mountain roads and I still had fun. Not nearly as much as I did with my RE070's but still. They do fine. Very predictable at the breaking point. Not snap release like the 070's.

Also, the Kumho SPTs seem to be a decent all rounder, though maybe not as much as the ASX.
I personally like Nitto Neogens. I have them on my 240, and they have been great for the 10K miles I've driven so far. Solid performance in dry and wet, and the wear isn't too bad, though the tread rating is 280, if I recall. I drive pretty casually, especially as of late.

I had a set of Falken 451's that I liked very well as an all around tire. The new 452 is supposed to be better in every way, 300 treadwear rating, still sticky enough to have fun but hard enough to get some miles out of. Also a bit of a bargain compared to some of the other tires out there.

I would suspect that the Kumho MX's would probably wear similiar to your BFG KDW's if you were to go that route.
You didn't mention that you need these tires for Snow purposes, but typically AS tires tend to last quite a bit longer. If you decide to go that route then the Bridgestone RE960AS, Kumho ASX, Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S all seem to be fairly popular All Season Tires.
If you are looking for a Grippier Summer tire that would last longer, then I would say you should probably be looking at the Falken FK452's or the Sumitomo HTRZIII's (However I haven't heard yet how much mileage people are actually seeing from these tires, but they are at the top of my list for the next set of tires to go with and I am currently running the FK452's).
FWIW - I used to have S03's before I got the FK452's. While the FK452's have never let go or caused problems for me, they just don't seem to inspire the same confidence level to me that the S03's did, but then again it is a different class of tire. The S03's had stiffer sidewalls than the FK452's do. It gave them a firmer more planted feel in my opinion. However, with the LIGHTER FK452's I have seen my MPG rating go up from about 20-23 MPG to a pretty regular average of 24-25 MPG. I just filled up today and got 25.94 MPG on my last tank. Now to be fair I think I have made slight changes to my driving style in the past few years that could have helped lead to the increased MPG's (shorter warm up times before driving and minor changes such as that), but I do think the lighter tire has helped as the car seems to accelerate a bit quicker now compared to the S03's.

i thought the KDW2's that I have are a compromise tire. decent grip, sidewalls a little too soft for my liking, but around 300 tread wear... i forget...
anything over 200 is long lasting to me. I think the KDW's are the only tire I've kept for over a year.
i want to try bridgestone re-01's though. i hear good stuff about them, but i'm not sure how long they last

+1 on the Sumitomo HTR Z's. I had the HTR Z II's on my first set of wheels and they were great for spirited driving due to a stiff sidewall and decent stick, but also lasted a long time. In fact I tried to kill them off at a track day and the day ended with them looking no worse for the wear.

I'd get the Kumho SPT tires. I currently have them for DD and they are wearing very well, even with my screwy camber/toe settings for autox. Decent grip when dry, excellent grip when wet (i got top time of the day at a wet autox event on them) and the price is good.
