Help from any commuters to San Jose area etc..

Calculate the miles per day you'll commute, multiply that times the price of gas+ 10% for maintainance. Then divide that by your mpg. Then calculate the amount of time you'll spend in the car commuting per day and multiply that by your hourly rate. Add that all up, and multiply it by 5 days by 52 weeks, and you'll see how much the commutewill cost yhou er year. Commuting to 100 miles a day was costing my about 14,000 a year =/

what kind of dog do you have??? there are pleanty of places down here that take dogs...its a little harder if you have a pit, rott or doby tho....you can find them!!
i used to commute from berkeley/vallejo (Pinole to be exact) to S SJ....and then to Milpitas....i HATED it...now i commute from sunnyvale to milpitas which is still a pita.
880 is a far worse commute from oakland than 680 south to 237 or mission....trust me...i tried everywhich way i could. and moving down here was the only answer.

i commuted from san leandro to san jose everyday for about a year. The traffic sucks, and i got carpool tickets for trying to cheat. Now im 10 mins from school. If you want some recommendations as to good places to rent from, post up what kind of monthly can you afford. If you work in sunnyvale, i'd say the cheapest way would be to stay in san jose and commute, but you might be able to find some cheap rooms to rent in cupertino, saratoga area. I'd definitely recommend getting a roomate and finding a 2 bedroom apart in cupertino.

This is me just throwing this out there, but you could get a motorcycle. I never get stuck in traffic, carpool, and to fill up its like $10-$13 for 91 (depending on how much it is in your area) You will keep a lot of wear and tear off your suby. Those are some of the pros of the motorcycle but there is also cons; being limited on carrying items with you, no heater =(, you are the bumper, you have to do yer hair when you get there.
But i think my bike has saved me a lot of money and time. I haven't had to pay that $4 bridge toll yet this year... I got a beater bike so the only maintence I have to do is oil, water, gas, and maybe tires.
like i said just throwing it out there...

I commuted from Hayward to Fairfield, driving there and back home is a half tank for me. Not to mention toll. It does suck, especially when I get stuck in traffic coming back home from 80 to 880 merging area. . .

BA commuting sucks if:
- you live more than 5 minutes away from your job
- you don't drive a motorcycle or ACCESS OK hybrid
That's it. There is no "good direction"; only "lesser evil" directions.
I would get an apartment, even if by yourself, that's 5 min away from work. I'd do this if I was single. Then you don't have a problem driving 1 hour to SF to meet your friends.
Biggest drawback is not living with your friends.

Do you work in a place where you go in early (6AM)?
It's the only way to beat traffic in the Bay Area...there's no such thing as a good commute during the hours of 8-9:30AM and 5-6:30PM.
Either move closer to work or go in early.

I use to commute from fairfield to millbrae that commute sucked! I had to be stuck in bay bridge traffic. So the toll it self took me about 30min-1hour + to get through. that commute really stressed out my life until I just quit my job. Now I work like 5-10mins away from work. I love it!uff:

Notice how everyone's story is "my commute SUCKED!"
The only people I know who said they had an awesome commute were people who lived 5 minutes away from work and could ride their bike as an option.
