my actual point was the english is not a static language, meaning it changes as the culture does. Therefore, since hella is a commonly used and has an understood meaning, it is indeed a word

I used to say hella so much my roommates started saying it, but as I've lived down here longer it's gotten to be a lot less.

You think it sounds weird when people don't say THE 5, however THE 680 sounds weird too.
