Gun experts help: which scope to buy?
I need advice on which scope is good buy for a 700 SPS 308 rifle.
I am stuck between the Leupold vx-II or the Bushnell elite 3200/4200 series, they are approximately same price point. Anyone with experience with these scopes?
Thanks in advance

You really can't go wrong with a Leupold.
My one piece of advice is BUY SOMETHING NICE the first time around. You really, REALLY do get what you pay for with optics, which is why some serious shooters have scopes that cost double of what the rifle cost, and I'm not joking here.
Super Sniper has a really cool scope out right now that sells for about $300, which used to sell for around $700. I can't remember which one that is, but I know Ryan (ish) knows, so I'll link him to this thread.
If you buy cheap, you will get cheap, I can guarantee it, and any experienced shooter will tell you that. The more expensive the scope is, the better it is. There's a reason these things cost so much, it takes a lot of time and effort to create a quality scope, unlike the really cheap ones which suck ***. The cool thing about the $300 scope I mentioned is the fact that it is only $300 due to some really great deal Super Sniper is doing, I know that thing usually costs more then double. It's an illuminated reticle scope with some pretty damn good zoom and quality lenses.
I'll let "ish" chime in here.

The scope Daniel is referring to is the super sniper scope by SWFA (formerly by Tasco). http://www.swfa.com/
It is probably the best bang for the buck scope out on the market.

The one I have had experience with is the rear focus 10x. I don't see any advantage to paying the extra $100 for the side focus vs the rear focus either.
Just make sure you get some decent rings to go with it and you will be set.

Like Ryan said, rings are SUPER important! If you get cheap rings, you will lose your zero really quickly under recoil, so make sure you buy some high quality mounting rings to hold that scope on. Like the scope, if you buy cheap, you will get cheap performance. One thing you NEED the scope to do is hold zero, whats the point of having a scope if you have to re-sight it every 20 rounds? You know what I mean?
Invest in a good scope that you will have for a long time, something you can use on more then one of your rifles, and also invest in some high quality rings to secure that sucker on, with those two out of the way you're ALL SET! Remember, you can always swap the scope and rings onto other rifles later on down the road. A scope is something you will have for a long time, so do yourself a favor and buy a good one the first time around.

I put a Bushnell Elite 4200 8-32x40mm on my Savage 10fp .308. It may be overscoped, but that scope is as clear as crystal. Also holds a zero excellent. Easy to adjust as well. It is for sale, along with the gun, but it is an awesome scope.

Like I said, i have that scope and have had it for a while, and yes, you are 100% right, it's a great scope! I paid like $300 for it if I remember correctly, and it performs like a $600+ scope easily. People hate on bushnell sometimes because they are name brand ****** and only like products that carry the highest end names... Just like car snobs who wont drive a subaru because it's a subaru, you know what I mean? Don't listen to them though, bushnell makes some pretty decent things in their higher end range.

For the OP, if you don't need variable magnification I would get a fixed 10x scope. The clarity of a fixed power scope will always be better than that of a variable magnification one.
