on the topic of ATT, today i went to a ATT store to switch my number from sprint to ATT, and they wanted a 400 dollar deposit to start my service. ive had sprint on credit for 3+ years, and have never had a credit problem with them. what the hell is up with that. has anyone else using ATT experienced this?

$400?!?!? that is ridiculous! go to a chinese owned cell phone shop. you'll get a better phone for cheap too. That $350 Samsung phone Turnwrx pointed out.. my gf is getting for $50 at her boss's store.
and Tmobile sux badly. Its based on cingular towers. I had cingular.. never again. my gf has tmobile now. (switching to AT&T next weekend). she cant complete ANY calls. they are always dropped or she has no service. East Bay, SF, anywhere. The only place she has good service with tmobile is in Sac where its nice and flat.

I'd have to differ with you bigtime...many know about how good AT&T's TDMA service is, I switched from that to T-Mobile GSM, and I get more minutes for the money, and I have a better phone, and the customer service isn't a bunch of a$$holes like AT&T. AT&T contracts are all BS, they are all bad....I had AT&T since '97...so glad to not do biz with them anymore.
I never have any problems getting good signal all over the East Bay, Tri-Valley, South Bay, SF, Peninsula, isht even all Houston Texas and surrounding areas!
If anyone in the East Bay or Tri-Valley wants a good deal on a T-Mobile phone or service, let me know, I have a good friend who takes great care of me, my GF, my bosses, and all of our friends.

In the Bay Area, including Sac, if you want to go with GSM make sure the phone uses the 850Mhz bandwidth, which is most of the newer GSM phones. I would also recommend going with AT&T over T-Mobile. T-Mobile leases their towers from Cingular, and from what I hear Cingular has very poor coverage as well as capacity issues. Also over the the next 6 months to 1.5 years AT&T is investing ~$275 million, in the Bay Area alone, into the GSM network. The current AT&T Digital (TDMA) network has about 850 towers in the Bay Area, whereas the GSM network will have over twice that in about 1.5 years. Also with AT&T they are going to be introducing the EDGE technology which will make the data portion of the phones extremely fast, faster than on any other network using data. The Motorola MPx200 and Handspring Treo 600 are very cool phones, with a ton of features.
(By the way I work for AT&T)
