GSM Cell Phone Question
My fiancee wants to buy a new phone but she's VERY picky about what she wants. Her with phones = All of us with our cars.
Anyway, she's used to the DoCoMo style phone of Japan because she was a recent student their. She FINALLY found a phone with AT&T that she liked but wished it had the coverage of T-Mobil.
Can anyone with an AT&T GSM plan tell me if they like it? Do you get good reception in the Sacramento/surrondign areas? Which is the BEST GSM phone in your opinion!?
I really need your help soon because this is an X-Mas present.
thanks a lot, Eric

I ordered an AT&T GSM phone in September and the coverage was horrible. I couldn't get decent reception anywhere in the East Bay. There were others here who had similar experiences.
Moreover, I had to spend hours on the phone with AT&T to get the account cancelled. They kept claiming that they were going to put up more towers, but I'm so bitter about the experience that I'm going to port my number over to Verizon or T-Mobile soon.

AT&T is ok as far as receptions, but most of their plans are not as good as Cingular, not sure about T-mobile...
for a good phone, Nokias are the most user friendly phone out there in the market IMO, they have the 7200, 6200 series, that are triband(world phone, so you can just swtich SIM cards to whichever country you are in), you can get it unlocked (if locked) from a website (i forgot which one), polyphonic ringtones, and colored screens.
so if she wants to buy a phone with AT&T and not get the plan, might as well just look into ebay or other sources that sell unlocked tr-band phones.
hope that helps

Porting - You take your number to another carrier. Of course you will almost always have to get a new phone. If you are under a contract you will have to pay your old service provider any ETF, however you can port to the new carrier prior to settling any outstanding balances.
Im not sure if AT&T is totally converted to GSM in NoCal, but my guess is that it covers mostly the major metro areas and falls back to TDMA in the outlying regions.
T-Mobile/Cingular - Share same coverage.
I'm partial to VZW. Less then 2% ineffective attempts and dropped calls. in CA.
of course they pay my salary though...
