Angry GRRR! Cali "Use Tax"

Great... got my appointment letter for the accountant and there was the notice to bring in all the receipts for stuff I had purchased on the internet from out of state so that I could do my part in paying the " California Use Tax".
The free ride is over folks, Arnold is gonna gun you down for those endlinks , sway bars , spoilers etc. you all bought!
I'm sure we could have avoided our current state fiscal crisis with some federal funds, but GW spent all the cash on bagging evildoers for his daddy!
So fork it over , internet shoppers!

I thought "use tax" was for when you have a Seller's Permit, and you buy stuff, and use it for yourself (i.e. no sale, so no sales tax collected).

Can any other business-owner confirm this??

no..., the USE TAX has always been in the books that people ARE SUPPOSED to fill out the appropriate forms from the kalifornia tax board and pay it...

this is for EVERYONE.

david, that is a wholesaler permit. when you buy under those terms, you are then SUPPOSED to sell them to the public where you are suppose to collect the appropriate taxes. myh sister who owns a bridal store down in LA, told me once she knew a couple who outfitted their home almost entirely using a wholesale permit.... GRRRRRRRR (mad that i didnt think of doing that... LOLLLLLLL)

i work for cal state hayward. everytime we buy crap from out of state, when we fill out the credit card forms, tax is somewhat automatically added already... D'OH!!!!!!

The Use Tax was put on the books in 1934, and the BOE started poking at it well before the Governator took office.

Welcome to Kalifornia. If this is only the tip of the iceberg.

I WAS right, just sent in my final business sales tax return, and indeed, it IS for my business sales tax OR use tax...

It's confusing, because they have the same name...

you need to be smarter then the adverage bear

if you are going to willfully bring in all your invoices for stuff you bought out of state, then pay your tax

if you dont bring them anything, then you didnt buy anything.

Who is this accountant you speak of? And doesn't he work for YOU? Our buddy Scott@S-Squared doesn't recall you buying anything...at least anything you can find a receipt for.

I didn't buy anything, either.

Youre all on the ball!

My accountant sends out a general check list with the appointment letter , its not that they want me to disclose , just that they must make it known. This is the first year according to them that it is being enforced on joe citizen for internet purchases, but as Scott said what they don't know from me will not kill them!
I know I DIDN'T buy anything because I am deathly affraid of my wifes wrath , as for those little packages that show up at work , hell, I thought they were gifts for me and my car.
Come to think of it , she scares me more than the IRS...
