Got my 60k service done at Mann...they had some bad news for me

The things that Gary told me about what he has done for his customers (aftermarket part failed and the manufacturer wouldn't warranty it, he fixed problem out of his pocket) says to me that this is the kind of place I want working on my car. They are exactly what I was looking for and they just happen to be near by too.
I've boiled my fluid but it was because of crappy brakes. Since I switched to DBA rotors I've had no issues at all. YEAH!
Is this more of an issue with the STI rack than the WRX? Is it just another draw back of these folks that are obsessed with being "slammed and flush?"
This is why I always recommend a full and complete check of a vehicle before purchase. If the seller refuses to let you get one, don't buy the car.

That's exactly what I said earlier too, a good shop is more likely to find problems that a lesser shop does not. It may end up costing you more because they found it, but in the long run, it is likely saving you frustration of having that problem at a less opportune time.

Anyhow... good luck to the OP. Your car is in good hands.

I only took it to Mann in the first place because of the good reputation it has on this forum. I'm glad that they're pointing everything out, it just sucks hearing about all that's wrong with the car and adding up the cost in my head.
I got the car inspected before purchase, but obviously the mechanic was not competent. He saw a few of the same things that Mann did, but not the steering rack or suspension (the most expensive fixes).

most steering racks "weep" oil/fluid. mine was doing it. bought an A1 cardone remanufactured rack and the ratio was crap (3 turns lock to lock instead of 2.5).
Swapped out the pinion section and seals. once the motor is back in my car we'll know how things are. with that. a new rack and pinion from Subaru should run you closer to $600, not $900.
Not sure having the car slammed would cause issues unless the previous owner was sliding/drifting around turns with the wheel at a lock end.
your struts are likely fine and functional but maybe not "optimal". if they are leaking and/or your car rides like a boat down the highway, then you need new struts.
the tires are sad but true. if your fronts are more than 1/2" OD different front from back you can damage your diffs, or so i've been told. if you know if a tire shop that has a tire shaver then they could fix your tires but its probably more work/cost than buying a decent new set from america's tires.

And I'm not too bummed about replacing the tires, I knew I had to replace the fronts anyway. Plus I was looking for some all weathers for this year's Tahoe trips.
And btw I hate America's Tire Co. They lost my OZ center caps and never owned up to it

none of this work that u are getting quoted for is not do-able on your own except the tires unless u have the means to do so in which case I will ask you to always help me swap tires when I start going to tahoe =)
Get your parts and do the install yourself. The spark plug is definitely not ideal but will eventually need to be fixed. Prices sound pretty high and no offense to anyone but just b/c you're not a dealership and u don't get the dealership prices on parts doesn't justify charging a lot more. If money isn't an issue then just leave ur car where its at. If you are looking for better prices then you should shop around. A couple people recommended some shops (not sure where ur local to your profile just says Bay area) but I'm sure you can find a reputable subaru specialist in the area to beat that price. PM me the work your getting done and I'll help you if you want to look for other options.

Nobody? Ok. You gotta pay to play man. Replacing tires is a fact of life. Stock struts are good for around 60k and not a whole lot more. And sometimes other stuff happens. Theres always stuff that could be wrong with a used car. I looked my e30 over for a couple hours before I bought it, when I went to do the timing belt the tensioner spring and rod were missing. You never know what somebody else did and no matter how hard you look or how qualified someone is there is going to be things missed.

I'm not sure about the difference between 02-04 and 06 STi steering racks but I saw this earlier today and thought you might be interested: 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi part out JBP
