I second (or third or fourth or whatever we're up to now) that. It depends on the insurance company, but often their "preferred" shops are shops that they have trained in not charging the insurance company any more than needed, i.e. doing it as cheaply as possible. I suppose it can mean more business for the body shop, but they have to fear getting kicked off the list if they bill the insurance company too much. And they can take that too far. Quite a while back my wife took our car to an insurance company approved shop, and they did such a cheap paint job that after looking the car over the insurance company sent an inspector to scold them. The exchange between the body shop owner and the insurance company inspector went something like: "You have to do this right." "But we didn't charge you for doing it right, doing it right will be expensive!" (I'm paraphrasing a bit...) They ended up doing it right, but it was a huge hassle and a waste of our time. Find a respected body shop and get it done right the first time.
