Good ski resorts around Harrah's Lake Tahoe?

As novices, stick w/ Sierra (3rd vote!!!)! Between all three places, they have the largest % of beginner terrain (25% vs. 15% KW & 20% Hv). Plus, the AmEx special is a steal!
If y'all do a 2nd or 3rd day, you'll likely need the all-mtn ticket to get on the next level lift, Rock Garden (i think it's called). On Day One, it might be a good idea to inquire about the 2-day package (at $130, that's still a great bargain). From the "Beginners" info listed here... http://www.sierraattahoe.com/info/winter/skiing.asp, it doesn't seem like you CANNOT ride anything but the bunny hill quad. So ask them about all-lift access b/c it would suck to not be able to progress further on longer & slightly steeper terrain after the first day.
Here's the shuttle info...

It's simple. Bus takes you there, then brings ya back to the hotel at the end o' your day.

Another vote of confidence for Sierra. It's not too bad of a drive, should be a piece of cake when you are going up.
I'd recommend butt pads. I've been snowboarding for 15 years or so, and still wear them. I wish I'd had them when I was first learning.

Am I able to get the butt pads through them when I rent my gears? Or do I have to go out and buy them on my own?
