Going to Southeast Asia soon

Guys
I'm going to Thailand and Vietnam soon, and need some advice as to what to do and where to go, I'll be in Bangkok, Phuket and Saigon, but probably a ton of places in Vietnam. Any advice will help. Thanks.

I've got a friend in the Singaporean Army and my best friends that's about to leave to see him for Singapore and Bangkok. I can ask if you could link-up with him if you'd like?

Keep it in your pants if you want to live. Everyone naturally assumes what you are going there for.

Take the ferry from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi and spend a few days there. I had a fantastic time, if you just want to chill out.

Pattia (sp) beach is lame, its way too touristy. It doesnt help any that i was there with a 3 ship amphib unit...

Its a lot of fun if you get away from all the lame bars and strip clubs. Go explore the jungle, ride an elephant, do some bungee jumping.

i wish i could remember the name of the hotel i stayed at, it was 30 min south of Pattiya beach, really nice place

Look out for punji sticks too. Charlie will sneak up on you when you least expect it.
And remember, never get off the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Unless you
are going all the way.

I spent a month backpacking in Thailand and Vietnam after college.

In Thailand:
--Go to a Thai Kickboxing match in Bangkok... it is a very wild experience
--Go check out the Patpong (red light) district of Bangkok even if you are not going there 'for ***'... it's fun just to walk through it and take in all of the crazyness.
--Check out Ko Phi Phi out side of Phuket.... or if you really want to get away go to Krabi (I think that's how it's spelled)
--If you can, spend a couple of days in northern thailand in Chang Mai.

In Vietnam:
I found the north much more interesting than the south. Spend a few days in Hanoi and stay in the old section of the city.
Take a day trip and hike to the 'perfume pagoda'... a crazy series of temples built into the caves in the mountains.
Spend a day or two boating around Halong Bay... this will be the highlight of your entire trip... Do not skip Halong Bay!! It's amazing!!

I would say definitely check out Koh Phi Phi and Chiang Mai in Thailand. Phi Phi has the best scuba diving and a really nice chill atmosphere. Clean beaches and good vibes. I recommend Island Divers for a good dive shop.

Chiang Mai in the north has the BEST night market for souveneirs. You should definitely buy all your goodies there... WAY cheaper than anywhere else in Thailand. You can get all the fake north face backpacks, diesel t-shirts, pottery barn plates/bowls, etc in chiang mai. Chiang Mai is also great for outdoorsy stuff like elephant trekking, bamboo rafting, etc.

Phuket and Koh Samui are similar islands in my opinion. Bigger and more crowded... but a ton to do at night. They both have lots of bars, clubs (regular and go-go) and decent restaurants.

I would spend as little time as possible in bangkok. There is so much more to see in the smaller cities around Thailand.

One other thing... since you will be in the area, I highly recommend a trip to Cambodia. If you can, go to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap and spend 3-4 days exploring the ruins out there. It's a unesco world heritage site and should be one of the wonders of the world. It will blow your mind! The people in Cambodia are also way less pushy when it comes to tourists, unlike Thailand where they've seen a million backpackers/tourists come through already.

Safe travels!
