Garage Shelving System?

Hey iclubbers,

I'm looking to clean up my garage and and would like some suggestions on shelving products I can use. I just moved in to my home about 2 months ago and I finally cleaned up the last box of crap.

I'm now interested putting up some type or garage organizing system. Any suggestions on products? If you have a nice garage, pics would be great.

Thanks in advance for your help,
dc

I don't really have any suggestions as I just reused the cabinets from our remodeled kitchen and bathroom. I would suggest checking out GarageJournal.com and more specifically, the forum that they have. I've found numerous helpful tidbits about garage design and storage.

I bought some cheap cupboard system that Sears was selling at the time. It cost almost $300. It was almost 10 years ago though.

My buddy and I went to Home Depot and bought some plywood and 2x4's and built a shelving system in his garage. It wasn't professional, but it worked very well. If you're into handyman stuff like that.

I also use a lot of costco shelves. I have like 4 or 5 of the chrome kitchen style racks and they work great. Last time I was at costco I noticed they had a pretty decent looking work bench with attached shelving system too, in case you are in need of that.

Yup, using the same/similar product here, two of them actually.

I like the Whalen stuff - looks rugged and will probably outlast me. At worst, I will most likely go with the chrome racks from costco like a few of you mentioned. That was actually what I was eyeing but wanted to make sure it would be a decent option. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

This, easy set up and will pretty much hold your house in an earthquake.

Hit up a used pallet racking place, they will have industrial style shelving and racking that is super cheap. It may be too tall for your garage but most places are happy to cut it to fit at no charge. If I can find my paper work I got 16' tall uprights for $15 and 10' cross beams for $5, place was in hayward. (too big for a garage but they have short shelving as well)

that seems like a great deal but I think I would have trouble getting it home. For now, the front runner seems to be the industrial racks at Costco.

one other hindrance is that on the sides of the garage, I only have about 18 inches of depth. I've been also thinking about coating the garage floor.....

The only problem I have with those types of racks is that they don't look very good filled with your typical garage crap. I prefer to have as much stuff behind doors as possible to keep it fairly "clean" looking. I would also suggest scouring Craigslist for old cabinets people are pulling out for a remodel. They can usually be had for dirt cheap and can be cleaned up/painted/stained to your desired color scheme.

Bought 2 of these shelves from lowes...

http://www.lowes.com/pd_319468-1281-...acetInfo=edsal

Then I bought this to put right next to it...

http://www.lowes.com/pd_2218-55738-L...7C1&facetInfo=

Not as nice as an actual storage bin with doors to hide it, but it def. helped getting things organized.
