I plan on going to take the four day defensive handgun course. I'm thinking that I'll drive there. My wife will probably fly.

I think it is 33 states now? http://www.handgunlaw.us/ Have mine through Florida and Washington. Planning on picking up Oregon this fall too. Just wish I could carry in the state I live in.

I would explore other options besides Front Sight, especially for handgun training. First off, they are very rigid in their training curriculum. The instructors follow an outline for the course, and they do not deviate from it. You must do everything their way. Also, they insist on teaching outdated shooting techniques such as the Weaver stance. These days, 99.999% of high level shooters from competition handgun shooters to military SOF operators shoot Isosceles. It is accepted as the superior shooting stance hands down. Only Hollywood actors shoot Weaver.

Yeah it's cool they give you a free XD pistol, but I'd rather spend the money on better training than get a free gun.

If you're going to be in Nevada, I highly recommend taking a class LMS Defense instead.

Did the practical rifle course a few years ago. Great training with the AR, other than the sales pitch for their real estate deal out there. They're trying to develop an open carry community there where everyone is carrying.

If you're thinking of going, try picking up the course at either the Mule Deer foundation, or Safari Club international benefit auctions. Me and my dad actually won the training at the Safari Club dinner through one of their raffles. Otherwise the training goes for ~75% to 50% of retail at auction, depending on the economy. 100% of the proceeds will go to the hosting benefit. Only problem is it doesn't look like either dinner is coming up until Spring '11.

If you do book some training with them, make sure to ask if they still do the helicopter rides. For a small additional fee they'll take you up in their helicopter and let you go full auto on an m16 hanging out of the side of the chopper! Best part is, you get to skip the real estate pitch. We didn't know about it till we got there, and of course it was sold out.

I had to do some reading to know what you were talking about. It seems that the Weaver method has indeed been mostly replaced but no one says it's a bad technique, just outdated. I suppose it would be nice if they taught the newer ones instead. I'm sure they have their reasons why they do it this way. I mean, I get them wanting you do to it their way yet I know that everyone has an opinion on the correct way of doing things.

Did you ask them about it when you were there? How long ago did you take a class?

I'm curious if they do this method for the defensive and something different for the tactical...

Handgun shooting has evolved significantly over the past 20 years. Front Sight teaches a decent course for beginners I suppose. They'll teach you the fundamentals like proper sight alignment and trigger control, etc. However, they are definitely behind the curve when it comes to teaching modern handgun fighting. I'm not saying Weaver is obsolete, different situations dictate what stance you use. You might not even be shooting from a standing position in a gunfight. It's good to train for every contingency. The fact that Front Sight only teaches one shooting stance is silly.

It might also be beneficial to get some instructional DVD's like the Magpul Dynamics Handgun videos also to supplement your training. Going to a class is great, but having something you can go back and watch to refresh yourself before and after training is also very useful. GL to you.

Thank you!

I'll be starting here at Frontsight as I already got my class with the springfield XD but will certainly keep your suggestions in mind! Once I return I'll be sure to get some videos.

For now, I'm pretty excited to be going to this. I actually have an extra class offer with the whole package... PM me for details. They very clearly say that I can sell it but can't advertise* it.

*not an advertisement.
