Flash problems: Do I need a new ecu?
So I've flashed my ecu multiple times and was attempting to do the same thing today with another rom I got from a trusted friend because my car was doing some weird **** lately.
Mid flash I get stuck at 40% into writing it, i see some message on the utility about "j254 failed interface closed" or something but it wouldnt let me do anything else. After 10mins I had to force quit it but now when I plug the check connectors in, my CE light wont flash and oviously the car wont start.
Is my ecu toast or is there something I can do? What could've possibly caused this? I know this isnt the tech forums but blah blah blah.
Thanks for the help =D

yeah you have a bricked ecu. you can send it to tactrix which would cost about 70$ i think for them to un brick it or just find one from a junk yard. does your car have an immobilizer? if so then you would have to tow it to the dealer after the ecu swap and recalibrate your keys. this happened to me and it was a PITA, although EQ found me an ecu that day. ASk LGT Mark, he sent his into tactrix i think.

no immobilizer, anyone want to sell me an 05 MT wrx ecu usdm?
also what can cause this to happen in the first place? i always make sure to put a spare battery on my regular battery so i dont fall under 14 volts and have this happen. i really felt like i was taking all the necessary precautions but apparently i missed something.
only thing new in the equation was the laptop. it was my first flash from it..

If you turned off your car mid flash, then yes that will brick it.
I sent my ecu to Tactrix for $75 + shipping. Got it back in a week. They reflashed it back to stock.
Mine got messed up because when i originally flashed my ecu, i was using a beta version of ECUflash. I uninstalled it because my romraider wasn't working with the beta drivers, and i installed the latest non-beta ECUflash. My car didn't like this, and the ECU bricked.
After I got my ECU back, I reinstalled the newest ECUflash beta, and everything works fine now. Can flash from e85 to CA91 no problems.

Yea planned on sending mine in and hopefully buying a used one to run in the meantime and having as a backup. Parts seem to be readily available when you dont need them though and scarce when you do. arghhh!
