^ think that's a little to small. I'm 5'7 and ride a 52, but Only way to be sure is go to a local bike shop and test some bikes out/get fit for one before you spend money on one. Don't want to get something to small/big then find out you have to sell it cause it doesn't fit.

How do you like those bars? I have been thinking about trying some like that to get a better position for longer rides w/out stops and hills and such.
Yeah I call that bike The Tenderizer. After a 90 minute training ride in my usual neck of the woods (Portola Valley), with the rolling hills and wind, it's like someone took a meat tenderizer to my legs. Last summer I rode it like this once a week and felt a significant increase in my flat power/efficiency.

The bars are pretty decent. I'm going to shorten them by 2" or so, they're just kind of excessively long. And you're right about them being great for climbing. You can also rest your forearms on the bull horn portion and get low low low (she hit the flo!).

if you dont have freakishly short legs and a long torso, then that might be a little small for you most people 5'7-5'9 ride about 52-55 depending on bike, steel bikes have a tendency to run true while aluminum bikes run a little small... im 5'8" and ride a 54 but would probably stand a lil more comfortable on a 52

Too small, definitely. My friend has this frame and it's a 52cm. I'm 5'7" and I fit it very well. Depends on a lot of other factors though, such as torso, arm, and leg length.

i ride a fixed gear everywhere. You can get "The Hour" for only 300 dollars on bikesdirect.com. I'd recommend that for now, since you're a beginner. It's what i'm riding. I've been working on mine a bit though. I got new pedals/clips/straps, new handlebars, etc. It's a nice bike if you ask me.

thanks for all the help on sizing guys, im gonna try and go to a local bike shop and see if i can get fitted for a road bike. I did the online measurements and it told me 49 but i dont got stumpy legs either though. I'll have to check it out and let you know

Good decision. I learned the hard way with my first bike..aha. But if your going to get a track bike, measurmemts are a tad different, but close to the same. So if you are going to get sized let them know it's for a track/fixed gear/road bike.

sounds good thanks!

I also tried www.competitivecyclist.com and did their online fit calculator and for some reason it really didnt help me on deciding what size I should get of the Windsor Clockwork.

Anyone have any experience with this test?

Good old Sheldon - http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-sizing.html

At the bottom is a list of other bike fit links that Sheldon thought were note worthy.

I ended up getting a Felt bike with a flip flop hub and front brake. It's a freakin workout riding it with the fixed gear hub. I had to ice my knee for awhile after a 4 mile ride through the city. It's just goin to take some getting used to. I put it back to the freewheel hub for now.

^^^You'll get used to it. My first long ride was about 20 miles and I was tired after that. Now I'm doing rides that are around 40-50 miles and that's when I get tired now.

I did my "mash from Caltrain to the Panhandle, then back after several beers" trip last night and it's been a while since I have done that ride due to my knee. My knee had no issues last night however since I have been off the bike I have become fatty mcfatterton and am out of shape as well. Been riding between San Carlos and Foster City a bit to get back in shape but the trip up the hill + ridiculous winds on McAllister last night kicked my ***!

That being said, I have to admit that I am getting ready to go with one gear. I truly enjoy the hub that I have, but my friend rode back with me to the station last night and I could barely keep up with him. He was on a single-speed roadie, another hand-built based on an old (but nice) frame that has been powdercoated brown and has the same wheelset as me. I think he is running 50/16 so it's a little aggressive, and he does this for a commute every single day. The only time my bike showed an advantage was being able to grab 8th gear and power past him down hills - but this is scary with only a rear coaster brake and after hitting it pretty hard in the hills the brake started to make some noise and feel unsafe... So, I think with the weight savings (something like 3lbs off the rear) and the simplicity I think I will be okay w/out gears. Found a really nice/cheap Cane Creek brakeset and I plan on using BMX levers. We'll see how it goes.

The biggest thing holding me back is my wife wants my 8spd hub and I have to unlace my wheel to give it to her, so there's no turning back if I take it off. If I didn't have the braking issues last night I prolly wouldn't consider it - but with the complexity of shifting and such in SF traffic, I think it will be fine. If I would have been on a single-speed as out of shape as I am, my friend prolly would have had to wait for me, so there's some inspiration to get fit.
