You can fish right in Lake Merced and Ocean Beach. Lotsa guys go to Baker Beach where the water is a bit calmer... just don't wander too far north or you'll get more than fish

Hey Vic -
Freshwater or saltwater? Most of the saltwater I've done since moving up to the Bay Area has been on party boats for salmon, tuna, etc. I did go to Pacifica once, and you're right , it's crowded...way too crowded.
I've done quite a bit of freshwater, and like mmboost said, Lake Merced can be good. I've done most of my fishing at San Pablo Damn Reservoir in the East Bay. For a few years, my buddy and I found a spot where where were consistently bagging trout limits (5 per person) by noon. But the action there has slowed down considerably, and the current fishing report indicates "slow". Last year we did Lafayette Reservoir (also East Bay), and got our limits by 10AM. Haven't been there since, but it may be worth a try.

Checkout this website (www.coastsidefishingclub.com). Run by private boaters around the bayarea. The hottest thing going right now is TUNA! I do Saltwater fishing primaily but live 5 minutes away from San Pablo Dam Reservoir. Freshwater fishing is to slow for me. The Salmon fishing is REAL slow but the Halibut fishing is good on a charter boat.

thanks all for the help.
i went yesterday to fort point by golden gate bridge. spent all afternoon there and all we caught was seaweed, and 2 crabs. well tons of baby crabs too. nothing took the bait either. except for those stinkin sea lions. tried to hit one of them with a sinker but it got tangled up on my fishing rod.
how much would these charter boats run for?

You could also go to Fisherman's Wharf and catch a party boat.
