ok, you have the potential to get 3 times better mileage. Article cited 60.5 MPG (I get ~20 MPG with my 2L turbo)

I just sold a 2006 Jetta TDI. I averaged 41mpg driving mostly in the city (the hills of S.F. no less) and I don't drive very slowly.

You're cousin is driving an F250 so it's still going to suck as that thing is big. However, it's getting better mileage than it would if it was a petrol car

Is he towing with it?

Hauling stuff around?

Anyhow, it's a well know fact that Diesels get better mileage and have great torque as well as longevity.

Don't bet on it. California has been getting very diesel unfriendly. My 2005 Dodge RAM has a CAT on it that looks like you could mix concrete in the damn thing. And I've heard the newer trucks will be subject to smog inspection. Never mind the new ultra low sulfur fuel that California pushed so hard for and now will be a nationwide requirement. This is why diesel is currently hovering around the same price as premium.

It may be that Subaru is able to bring the diesel to the US, but it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't available in California for a while. The VW Jetta diesel was a great little diesel commuter till CARB tightened things up and VW discontinued sales at least here in California. They have a new one they're working on, but last I heard it was delayed while they try to get it to comply with CARB requirement.

Though I gotta say, I think it's pretty comical how they thought they were going to clamp down on the diesel pickups with tougher rules to "clean them up" and all that happened was that they built bigger motors. Dodge went from 5.9L to 6.7L to put out basically the same amount of power, but the new 6.7 uses more fuel to go the same distance. So what did they actually do? Cause us to burn MORE fuel. Nice job.

Damn Hippies....

The Fords do suck more fuel than Chevy or Dodge for sure. But I guaranty he'd be getting even worse mileage burning gasoline.

My Dodge RAM 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 will average 22-23mpg on the highway. Full size trucks with gas motors are hard pressed to get close to that.

But put a 10K pound trailer and things really get good. I'll get 12-14mpg and even measured 15mpg with a bit of a tailwind pulling my fifth wheel. Same trailer on a gasoline powered truck and you'll never see double digit mpg number. 7-8mpg is about right.

Note: I drive my WRX a lot harder than my wife drives the truck for sure. But, the truck weighs over 7000 pounds. We average about the same mileage. 17-19mpg in mixed driving. When I had a Dakota with a 5.2L V8 in it, I was running 13-15mpg average.

Supposedly we'll see the boxer diesel here in the US by mid-year 2010:

That F250 isnt hauling anything more than the fact it has an extra 4000 lbs on it...from EVERY...STOPLIGHT!

Put that engine in a 2000lb car and it would get way better MPG
