Exclamation Facebook does High Resolution...

I just kinda stumbled across this. When I uploaded my pictures I opted for the hi res option because my pictures were hi res. But once I got them uploaded it didn't seem to make a difference when I was actually flipping through the pics. But now when I look at pictures there is a link "Download in High Resolution" below the pic. Well, I you left click it and copy link address I get this...

http://hphotos-snc6.fbcdn.net/172124..._1287940_o.jpg

And if I add the IMG code to that I get this...

Fun fact for any of you guys out there who kinda don't like smug mug, flickr, or the sort but you happen to have a facebook account.

Yeah, they've done this for a couple months now I think. I'm pretty sure I uploaded all the NYE shots in high-res. Not sure about Halloween.

Fun fact: Experiments have shown that Photobucket and flickr degrade uploaded images more than facebook.

Image quality is pretty terrible in my tests.... Failbook resizes and compresses the hell outta large images.

Uploading ~13 ish megapixel 5-10mb lightly compressed jpegs results in heavily compressed ~400k "high resolution" downloads..

At least SmugMug keeps files kept in original format and resolution.. And you retain all use rights to your images.. (yearly fee is minimal for lack of ads and retained full ownership of files)

Edit / Test: - Interesting.. Do like the vampire share of larger file.. - And Image quality is improved from when it was first deployed.. Still not up to snuff when compared to SmugMug.. But not bad for free.

Not to mention I'd never tell a client "You can proof your photos on my facebook."

Yep... But I think that is the difference.. SmugMug is an awesome place for photographers (amateur or otherwise).. Facebook / flikr / etc. are for sharing "pitch-uurs" with friends.. Shouldn't all be lumped together..
