it was a training flight with student pilot in front and teacher in rear.
reports seeing fuel being jettisoned before the crash. also reports say plane was trying to get to the atlantic ocean to ditch there.
both pilots punched out with minor injuries.
some injuries on ground. no deaths though.
the incident report will be an interesting read...

My home in Phx is under the Luke AFB training area. We have f16's over head all the time. And about once every 2-3 years one drops out of the sky. It still doesn't scare me to move. The sound they make alone makes me stay.
After a bit you know the correct sound of a fighter jet overhead. You can detect the ones that are not. At that point you just watch to make sure those clear you over head.
One of the coolest things I have ever seen was when they launched the whole base at 1am. It was like 30 f16's all afterburner'd out of town. And they did it all in less then 5 min.
I'm glad those guys in the FA18 training paid off. There is a lot to happen when you fail at take off. Trying to control the dead plane and dumping the fuel saved lots of lives on the ground.

Never forget going on the 5, asleep passengers seat window cracked an inch
Woke up sure i was in a head on triple digit speed accident zone and people were dead, only to realize some jerkoff swooped in making the weirdest sound (could he have flown directly down at us full speed and used the air brake before negotiate back up) anyways imagine a topgun fly by over your car X100 at incredibly low altitude yet going so fast it was out of sight within 7 seconds.
Just glad i didnt **** myself, seriously.
I know plans some what, couldn't even tell if it was an f18 or not happened too fast.

That's awesome! Wish I had that instead of San Jose Int Airport, lol.
(I remember seeing some F16's playing over the Nevada high desert about 15 years ago. We were on a ridge camping and the 4 jets came flying through a canyon, super low, super fast... Gave me goosebumps as to how cool it was.
