this is so true for the Bay Area.
i never signal on the freeway. when ever i do people always speed up and wont let me in. dont get me wrong im not cutting people off. its just ill change lanes with our signaling, and when i do i always make sure there is plenty of room. usually if there are not to many people on the road ill signal or at night i always try to signal just cause its safer. but i hate putting on my signal, checking my mirrors, looking to my blind spots, and then find out some one sped up to not let me in. it makes no sense. "HEY MISTER IM NOT GOING TO SLOW YOU DOWN ANY!! im only changing lanes to get by some one or get off the freeway, damn!" if people were more courteous i would signal every time.
on the other hand i almost always let people who signal in. i think its just the right way to drive, even if you have to slow down to do it. especially big trucks or slow cars. if i dont let them in no one will. some times i might be in a hurry or something and just change lanes to avoid slowing down, but usually im just chill.

I once got pulled over in LA for using up too much of the merge lane on the freeway...WTF..since I was passing everyone (not speeding) I kept going till the end....also asked for the vehicle code for "not merging fast enough" and thus got a stern warning instead. what a joke.

Just so everyone knows, a simple google search yields CVC #22107, Mandatory use of turn signals to signify intent of changing lanes. I fully agree that in SF you have to be agressive to even get in a lane, but be warned there is a law.

i never have a problem with getting into the lane i want, i always signal 10 seconds before, if you work your way in and show youre not afraid to trade paint, then they will step on their brakes and deal with it.
Everyone has to deal with it so most are cool with it.

I'm pretty sure there is a law about excessive lane changes, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to cite you. If you think it's a bogus CVC then you could always fight it in court.
PS - the best is when you have somebody that changes lanes a lot and then you catch up to them at the light.

Seriously, if you have a problem with someone - pass them, or let them pass you. That is something I don't understand about humans. Someone wants to get past - so most people take tons of pleasure in blocking them, trying to **** them off - etc. Essentially purposely creating a dangerous situation on the road (you know this) because you feel that they shouldn't be doing something they are doing.
Pardon the rant. I have been commuting on 101 (which often means el camino or Central) since Sept now and there is no shortage of crap that pisses me off every day. Usually it's either someone on the phone swerving along changing lanes and slowing everyone down or some jerk doing something on purpose to make things worse. Honestly - that's worse than someone just being dumb because at least they aren't doing it on purpose.
Either way, I will probably get my car vandalized some day or something because of how I drive. I have simply zero patience for people who impede the flow, and get around them asap. In the morning, that's what the carpool/passing lane is for. Which reminds me, I need a refill for my air horn.
And I really enjoy driving in SF - it's like playing football in cars. I always signal and have no problems changing lanes. No respect for people who don't signal.
