Buy one if the following is true:

1. You just playing for fun.
2. Don't plan on performing.
3. It's your first time touching a guitar.
4. If you plan on having it sit in a corner and later reselling it on ebay because you never play the thing.

You can get better guitars at musiciansfriend.com

They are having a big clearence right now, you should check it out if you are interested. I'm sure that the Esteban guitar is a POS.

This dude: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/519633/
is a much better deal. It isn't top quality, but for that price range you can't get anything top quality.

I bought a guitar that was list $799.99, on clearence for $450, and I took it for $360.

This was at guitar center.

I also bargain hard and some circumstances worked in my favor.

Oh yeah, I left with exactly what I came for. I knew what I wanted and if they didn't budge on my bargaining I would still have bought it for $450.

dude,

I've got one of these....Saw it really drunk 1 night and decided I wanted to learn guitar. Didn't want to pay all $200 so I went on ebay... there's a ton there and I picked a set up: guitar, stand, bag, videos, books, picks, xtra strings for about $110. Showed it to one of my buddy's w/ a $700 martin and he said it was a good buy. It actually Sounds really good :0 !
IMHO a good buy for a beginner.

a no frills guitar. It is quality and can perform well if you know how to play a damn guitar. For a beginner like me (and prolly you) can't tell the difference. Woth the c-note from ebay.

you can also go over to starving musician and get smokin deals on used stuff (and then later sell it back to them to cover part of the cost of upgrading).

As far as Guitar Center, you gotta treat it just like a car dealership, 'cause that's how they operate in the back office (I used to work there long ago). Haggle your *** off and save a buttload.

I've never played one, so I shouldn't have called it a POS, but as a general rule cheap guitars play poorly.

Cheaper guitars usually have bad action (the strings are too high off the frets), poor intonation (the notes are not in relative tune, which sounds bad), poor truss stability/adjustability (the neck bows and warps), poor joints (which makes sustain short and bitter), and overall poor tone.

I prefer suggesting more intermediate guitars because you will be less likely to hate it and not want to play.

But subawho? seems to have firsthand experience, and you can't really argue with that.

Like anything in life, you have to work hard at it to get good. I have a custom Martin at home and it hasn't made me play any better than before I bought it. I do love the guitar though.
