EPA study warns that automobile catalytic converters, which have dramatically reduced smog for twenty years, have now become significant and growing cause of global warming; converters break down compounds of nitrogen and oxygen from exhaust that can combine with hydrocarbons and produce smog, but researchers have suspected for years that converters sometime rearrange compounds to form nitrous oxide, which is 300 times as potent as carbon dioxide; new study estimates that nitrous oxide, nearly half of it produced by vehicles, now accounts for about 7.2 percent of gases that cause global warming; increase comes from increasing number of miles traveled by cars with converters, and problem has worsened with more efficient converters; EPA is not proposing solution at this time; official Wylie J Barbour comments

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Just like being an illegal immigrant.

What? Are you for real? Washing your car is not illegal unless you're talking about degreasing engine compartments and letting the oily sludge go into the storm drain! Where the heck did you get that from?

If you're going to break the law, at least don't be an idiot about it. Having a loud *** exhaust, illegal tint, and plates missing is just asking for a cop to pull you over.

To his credit the guy knew he was an idiot, and didn't lie about running catless to the cops.

his plates were only missing because his car was brand new, so he hasnt gotten them yet

and yes he knew he was breaking the law knew what the consequences were and now has to suffer them and his exhaust wasnt too too loud.

Car Info: I got a couple :)
FYI, smog excempt cars are still required to have all the smog components on thier cars period. You can get pulled over and still get cited or sent to the ref station for non compliance when you take all the smog equipment off the vehicle. You are still required to have them on by LAW (but no one pulls them over anyways.).

So dont even think that if you drive a smog excempt vehicle that the smog laws do not apply to you... they still do...

My OChem teacher (doctoral thesis on polymer pollution) stresses this fact everytime cats come up in class (more often than you would think). Catalytic converters take one form of pollution and make it into another hazardous form of pollution. They don't really prevent pollution at all. Please tell this to all the people who feel high and mighty about "saving the environment" with their horsepower reducing catalytic converters. Maybe you're not making a horrible smell, but you're killing the earth all the same.

While this may or may not be true, the Law and those that enforce it do not take logic or facts into consideration. If it's illegal, you can get busted for it regardless of whether or not it makes sense.
