I don't think you can be too prepared. I really started thinking about this more after my daughter was born. Need to make sure I take care of my family.
I keep four cases of water at home and rotate them. I also have a couple of empty 7 gallon water containers in the garage. I have tons of canned food and 2 cases of MRE's my uncle gave me which will also get rotated.
I have a Camelbak HAWG that can hold 3 liters of water in the car that contains the following:
Camelbak HAWG
emergency radio
paracord
signal flares
pocket saw
fishing line
Leatherman Core
pack jacket
paracord
FRS radio
MURS radio
pens
knife
large caribiner
swiss tech tool
eye glass strap
whistle
butane jet lighter
inside a small MOLLE bag inside the camelbak that can be attached to the outside if I need more space:
Quik-clot ACS
high-volume gauze pad (2)
compression bandage
nitrile gloves (4)
resuscitation mask
pack towel
emergency space blanket
duck tape
tylenol
Ziplock inside the main compartment of the Camelbak
emergen-c
change of clothes
socks (2)
toilet paper
salt/pepper
Nalgene bottle inside the main compartment of the Camelbak
superglue
cash
oral-b brush ups
nalgene/brunton compass lid
bandaids (various)
q-tips
ziplocks
needle
thread
safety pins
red fish hooks
sinkers
water tablets (12)
magnesium fire starter
lighter
matches
folding knife swiss army
keychain light
caffeine gum
powerbar gel
antibiotic cream
stock cubes
zipties
votive candle
pencil
Ti spork
I also have a signal mirror and a magnifying glass that I carry in my wallet. I also have a cool little tool called the Atwood TiBaby.
This is just to sustain me if I am out and about until I can get home if a major disaster strikes.
In the context of this thread, I think the most important thing people can carry for a disaster in an urban environment is water, communication, and shelter. I always have a water bottle, cell phone, jacket, whistle, and pocket knife on me at all times among other things.
I am a total geek.
