DVD copying

hey,

I'm in college right now and don't exactl have a ton of space in my dorm room for my DVDs. On my trip home, i'm thinking about copying my DVDs. I just have a few questions and would appreciate some help. I'm using a laptop so I don't have two DVD drives. It does however do DVD+R DL though. I would like to copy the DVDs such that I can play them in a DVD player. I hear that double layer is much better because it can hold more, but if it's not necessary, i'd like to save some money and stick with DVD+Rs. How do I go about copying my DVDs? Links and/or advice would be nice. Thanks. One more final and I'm going back home to the bay!

happy holidays

DVD shrink

EASY, the quality is still GREAT. It will compress a DL DVD to play on a regular 4.7Gb DVD. You can edit the dvd before you rip it, like taking out languages or subtiles or extras that you don't want, helping to improve space for the DVD. I took Friday Night Lights and copied it and it compressed it down to 48" of it's original size to fit it in it's entirety on a regular DVD disc, and When i played it back, I was amazed at how great it looked.

PM me your e-mail addy and I'll see if I can send you the program.

occasionally run into problems burning the whole disc - then you have to "re-author" just the main movie or whatever extras you want.

My favorite method: use custom for everything BUT the movie and put it at the highest compression rate, also only keep audio and subtitles for languages you actually understand. This frees up the maximum amount of space so that the compression of the actual movie is the least possible amount (less compession = better picture quality)

Yeah, blockbuster and I have a partnership. That's what I'm working towards right now, starting a collection.

DVDShrink is good
another alternative is SlySoft's AnyDVD + CloneDVD

anydvd decrypts the disc right when you put the dvd into your computer so it can be burned and cloneDVD does the rest, makes an image to be burned. you can choose what you want to take out or leave in to make the quality higher. sometimes its good to take things out like the trailers or advertisments or other extra features that you would never look at.

you can check torrentspy for the latest ones available

Anybody ever use DVD Rebuilder in conjunction with cinema craft encoder? I'm about to give that a try.

I "backed up" Shaun of the dead using intervideo dvd copy, but it made all of the colors bright. I then "backed it up" using Nero recode (OEM) , and it came out better. I'm one picky SOB, so I'll probably never be happy with the results

I do the same. I turn all the extras into still images, compress the titles as much as possible, and take out all the extra sound files that I dont need (only keep 5.1 english)

On some movies, the movie itself isnt compressed at all.

DL disks are the only way to get the whole movie uncompressed, but for the cost of the media, it just isnt worth it. What do you guys use when both decrypter and dvd shrink fail?

2 movies stand out at me. Madagascar and Assualt on Precinct 13

I wasnt able to successfully copy those

I have been using dvd x-copy this whole time. No compression so it splits it into 2 dvds. If it can get the main movie onto one dvd you can then cut out all the special features if you want to. Perhaps I will try dvd shrink so I don't always have to use 2 discs per movie.

ucbsti, I was able to copy Assault on Precint 13 using dvd x-copy without a problem. Haven't tried madagascar.
