I cheat those situations by using my parking brake. Saves on the clutch too. At least that works for me on those steep hills in SF.

That must be a steep hill if a WRX can't make it up. What other cars/suvs/trucks/semis are up there?

Make sure you have a full tank of gas. You might be getting fuel starvation because of not enough gas in your tank. Just a thought.

Oh and what gear are you in when trying to get up it? Try downshifting a gear and see if that works better to maintain speed.

damn! that must be one steep hill! I used to live in SF and still go there from time to time. I've been on some VERY steep hills in SF never die out while going up... But then again I drive a 25.RS with 10:1 CR (better low end torque?).

usually, i shift my transfer cases to their lowest position so i get an effective 148:1 final gear ratio. when i can lock up the torque converter, i can theoretically double it...

I don't know if it's still the case, but older cars (like in the Packard era) have a lower reverse gear than first, and a lot of them couldn't make it up in first so they'd have to back up the hill

I've had trouble starting up a hill before, but once it's going it'll usually make it up without a problem. I use a variation of e-brake method by heel-toeing the start, figure it distributes the braking a bit more evenly...

I believe that still works. The reverse thing. Because I have been what I thought to be stuck in snow, when I put it into reverse I started to go right through very easily.

problem with going backwards with a lot of load on them is that the reverse face of the ring gear is about 20% weaker than the "drive" face...

so be careful...
