Haha.. If you fudge it and force it, expensive noises happen...

I had an '86 Toyota pickup that had a 4spd in it, and the clutch went out - I think the pressure plate just gave out. I had a 5spd for it, so I didn't care and drove it for about 3 months without using the clutch. We had a loop driveway, so you just start it in 1st and take off. Come to a slow cruise and kill it, lurch to a stop. Carefully rev match to change gears, gently weighting and unweighting (floating) the gearset so you can gently get it between the gears. Never did break. I never did try doing it in anger, as it never occured to me. Seems like stuff would break and that is a stupid thing to do. I like it when people mention stuff like that, so this way you know to never ever ever ever ever under any circumstances consider the possibility of pondering the idea of letting them drive your car.

Ooooh the pain! You'll want to double-clutch that one. Release the clutch in neutral to match the gearset for the next gear via spinning it up to match the revs for the next gear down, slip it quietly into gear, profit.

Charley is correct on what he just said.

i know... i like when retards try to sound all cool by saying bla bla bla bla double clutch bla bla bla bla. like they just watch Fast and Furious...we drive modern cars with modern transmissions...there is no need.

i dont think theres any reason to, even to see "how your doing on your rev matching" you should be able to tell even while using the clutch. Otherwise the only way to tell is by hearing an "expensive noise"

not right away...but 1 tooth leads to 2...4 8 16...within a few days!

i let my friend drive my mazda gtx and i think it was him forcing it into first at stop signs that toasted my transmission.

Kyle,

this isn't that hard to do, and actually it will shift smoother than using ur clutch... the only time it F's it up is when u force it in, it wont go in if the rpm's are off, and actually

and it is nice to know if ur rev matching is correct even when using a clutch. if ur rev matching is off with a clutch, ur going to be burning clutch..

i occasionally do it on my dirtbike...but yeah...those are easy to fix!

as far as rev matching, ive noticed to slow down using downshifts, its best to hardly rev it at all, and just brake as your clutch is still trying to catch up, and only catches up when youre finished braking, it really throws you forward more so than using just brakes. But in a turn i rev match as close as i can to not disturb the tires.

wouldnt getting a superlight flywheel shift just as fast as no clutch? since with a stock flywheel you have to wait a 1/4 second for rpms to drop?

I always wanted a light flywheel so i could rev up my engine and have it sound like the cars of Gran Turismo at the starting grid lol

Daniel, your friend is either lying, or his definition of high speed driving is way off.

I can easily drive my car only using the clutch to start from a stop. With a little practice and being gentle it's no big deal. But it's impossible to shift a WRX fast without the clutch at least partly due to the massive flywheel. The engine speed just doesn't change fast enough, especially for up shifts where the motor has to "coast" down, you just have to wait for it. Down shifts you can blip the throttle but these things don't exactly crack to life with a blip of the throttle.

So clutchless shifting is a slow and easy with a stock tranny.

all i have to say is i'd love to rallyX against said guy and see who wins...thats the only way to settle this

Ive noticed the more people talk about cars, the less they can drive them. Thats why all the people at parking lot meets are never to be seen at autocross/rallycrosses...2 different crowds
