For real? sorry for the 52 that died but, come on now! That's not many compared to other related deaths. What about the hundreds that are killed by drunk drivers and teen drivers.

Oh fudge I forgot about heel-toe rev matchng which I doing so automaticaly I forget I do it.

This legislation sucks.

Put another question in the DMV test. Q: if your throttle gets stuck what should you do? A: SHIFT TO NEUTRAL.

How about turning off the engine? This is one of the fastest methods of slowing down I have found.

Turning off the engine also shuts off other systems that could potentially aid in helping you get the car back under control. Shifting into neutral is probably the best immediate action you could take if you're in that type of situation.

The govt. assumption seems to be that everyone drives automatics.

While I guess that's true, as someone that has driven without power brakes or power steering quite a bit, I would be shutting down my engine. Probably the biggest concern with this is accidentally locking the ignition or worse, removing the key.

Honestly I would be VERY surprised if your average driver could figure out how to get their car into neutral in a time like that. As nutty as this sounds, find some people in your life who are NOT car people and ask them to put their car into neutral when you happen to be in their car. It's shocking. In any event it would involve most people taking their eyes off the road where reaching for the key would not. Another item is that if the throttle plate is really pinned open, there is no vacuum for brakes anyway. But I see your point.

Here's what happens when you lock the steering with key in off position

Didn't click the link... But I am guessing... The steering wheel locks?

Probably not a good idea to do that with the vehicle in motion.

he's being towed with a rope by his buddy in a Land Rover and he's steering the road until it gets sharp enough to lock. Then panic. Then BAM. Then great sadness.

And it's a subie too.

I was driving a rental truck today, and I tried getting it into neutral quickly - turns out I was mistaken. Just WHACK the shifter and it's in neutral. I thought you had to pull it to move the shifter or release a button if it were a console style (this is a column shifter). So you're right, way faster.

What I wonder is, what is going to happen when people start doing OTHER THINGS like they drive. I have prepared an example:

Larry: "Gee, Bob, what happened to your arm there???"
Bob: "Well, I was ripping these 2x4's on the table saw and I thought I would try updating my Facebook status and eating a salad at the same time and then BAM no more arm... See here the salad fork is stuck in my ear."

I dunno, maybe that was funnier in my head.
Hahahahahaha holy ****, that's hilarious.

Right.

My friend has a 370z and it works really well. He's not a car guy, but the 370z is sorta waking the car guy in him a bit and the synchro rev match makes him downshift like a pro.

It's wierd but good. The feature truly makes you eliminate the heel-toe blip... and even if you hesitate (and the speed of the car falls) the synchro rev continues to keep the engine rev'd at the right speed so you seriously just release the clutch.

For what I expect to be just a little more ECU electronics, this is a really nice feature. I'd expect all the necessary sensors are already in place.
