CVC 27150 ( Inadequate Muffler )
Ususally i get a CVC 27151, but this time my dumbass got a 27150, requirig me to get a certificate stating my exhaust is under 95db. when i went to the CHP office in Redwood City, they said to look in the phone book and call shops to find out where there would be db testing available.......
sound fishy to anyone else?

not fisy at all. IIRC, any "test only" smog shop should be able to do noise certification. frankly it's a level of protection for the motorist. we're no longer at the mercy of an officer's subjective evaluation of what is excessive noise.

I am not sure if a test only station can do it, it might need to be tested at a ref station.. but it should be pretty easy. No visual as far as I know
they just measure the db at the correct distance, and if you pass, they throw a sticker on the back of your ticket to prove you are in compliance.
the cool part is you get to keep the ticket so if you get pulled over again, you show it to the office so he can see you are in compliance of the CVC

Some information my friend AR and I dug up was violating 27150(a) just means that you car was not equipped with an "adequate muffler", this does not necessarily mean "quiet" muffler, but could mean a muffler that was improperly maintained therefore creating more noise than it should suppose to. I was written up for 27150(a) and would present my case in court showing proof my exhaust was properly installed, in proper working condition (no holes or leaks), and did not output any more noise than it was designed for. Also, to further beat getting cited for 27150(a), I found this:
