CV axle question

So I picked up an "oem" style cv axle from oreilly.... (I know should have just gone genuine).

It looks to have the same splines but a smaller shaft diameter, the inside boot is black instead of green and I was just wondering if it could be a WRX axle. Are STI and WRX axles interchangeable?

Does anyone have a spare OEM STI cv axle sitting around?

I could be wrong, but isn't the '04 STI axle actually different than the '05+ axles?

BTW - Are you looking for a Front or Rear axle?

the 04 axles in the sti are interchangeable with wrx axles. Part numbers cross reference. The new Chinese garbage you get through auto stores are hit and miss, so make sure you keep paperwork for when it fails on you. The price is right though!

Lifetime is a loose term; if the the axle fails in 2yrs the replacement axle only has a 12mo warranty.

Is it a front or rear axle? The WRX and STI front inner splies should be the same between WRX and STI, the rear are NOT as the inner CV must mate up to the R180

I have to say this because I shudder at the thought of fellow i-clubbers buying that cheap chinese crap from Kragen. If you need a spare part we have a good hookup at a dealer.

Contact Ryan at Steven's Creek Subaru, (Unit 91 on i-club) he know's his stuff and he's the parts manager. They will ship overnight if needed and give good prices. You might have to put up with a few stories about his sexual conquests but if you can get through that you'll find you get OEM at a good price from somebody who knows what he's talking about.

I am not affiliated with Steven's Creek, but I have had some parts from there and want other members to benefit from the hookup

I replaced the passenger front axle on my '03 WRX with a Kragen unit and have this annoying clunk sound from the axle sliding around everytime I go over rough roads. As others have said, go with OEM.

Other than the noise, it's been find for the last 50k miles. But oh that noise! It makes my car feel like a giant turd.

Hey Glen, thanks for the tip. I'm going to run it for now because I was stupid and didn't wait (today was first and only day I could work on it for the next few weeks and it was leaking grease badly), but I will be getting an OEM one and replacing it soon.
