Commuting on a scooter 20 miles in the south bay
I need to get from San Jose to Mountain View and back for my commute and I'm considering getting a scooter to save gas.
Does anyone do a similar commute on a motorized 2 wheel vehicle? Tips?
I know BA drivers suck and don't know how to look out for cyclists and bikers.
Obviously, I can't use the freeways on a scooter.

Gas is not that expensive. And you have a very short commute compared to most people here.
It would take a long time before you ever see a return on investment for spending a few thousand dollars on a scooter while saving a couple dollars a week on gas. Scooters are cool and everything, but it would take a long time for one to pay for itself.

running the math... it would take 68 weeks (a year and a third) on my current commute before the scooter started "paying for itself" if it cost $2k...
assumptions : 20mpg city vs. 100mpg scooter, 17miles one way, $4.23 premium, $4.03 regular

That's only if you can assume gas prices won't be rising for the next year or so. As gas prices start to rise, you'll be making up the difference even faster. It would still probably take about a year or so. I also don't know too many scooters that get 100 mpg. 70 or so is more like it unless you get a DiTech Aprilia, but those tend to cost more.

Now if he were to sell his car and use the scooter for his main mode of transit, then yes, there would be a huge cost benefit.

If we move closer to my office in the next year or so I'm buying one of these...

The dude is local here and I've talked to him at the coffee shop. He makes a 4 stroke one now that's not "exactly" street legal. 4 stroke. bigger bore. faster.

I got a Yamaha Zuma and commute sometimes to SJSU. Its about 12 miles from milpitas and takes me about 25 min. You should buy used definitely a lot cheaper, replacement parts are cheap. I'd recommend a 125-150 cc if you're not looking to mod. Make sure the scooter is DOT and CARB approved so you can register it.
Here's a site if you're looking to buy new: http://www.motorxtremes.com/scooters...FSQ****d1kd0DQ They're not made by yamaha or honda but they've gotten pretty good reviews.

Between my house and work is MILES of strawberry fields, dirt and orchards. My commute is about 30 miles each way or so and I can do it without hitting the highway but I need something that can get up and go on 129 so I don't get smooshed by a semi.
Been thinking something like a honda or a KTM for a long time but I think over the winter I'm gonna build something like this...
or
I have been looking at these modified Ruckus' though. I could stash one over by the wife's office and catch a ride with her to work and then smash it over to my office.

The ruckus is cool and all, but it's horribly underpowered for a large individual like myself or if you ride somewhere with hills That mtn. bike thing is sweet though. The cost savings aren't just in recouping the cost of the scooter as you're also putting much less pollutants into the air (maybe call this the "earth cost").

Those "measely 20 miles" takes me 45 minutes to run because of traffic. A scooter will get good mpg AND make traffic almost negligible.
