ive seen these CHP planes flying over 101 before. i was flying to south county airport (san martin) and the damn CHP plane was at traffic patter altitude while i was trying to set up on a 45 entry into the pattern. i dont think they really concentrate on flying because he got within about 500 ft off ri right wing tip coming towards me. kinda scarry when you dont know if the other guy can see you or not

I got popped by the airplane just getting into Gilroy. That was like 15 years ago So they still existed then

They will stalk 152 from Los Banos to 99 too. Cruising along all of a sudden you see 5 CHP cars lined up just waiting for the go call from the plane.

Beware of planes flying parallel to the highway Not sure about now, but they used to have red tipped wings.

^ i dont think they have ID numbers on the sides either. Not that you can see that far...but i think ive spotted one once being a passenger a few weeks ago 101 thru King City.

I read somewhere that there must be 2 people in the plane: one to keep an eye on instruments and one to keep an eye on the speeders

My ticket only says one name (besides officer that wrote it) so im guessing there was only 1 pilot (why would they bother to pay for 2?) But again, i really doubt im taking this to court.

Kyle, check it out yourself it may have changed, but when I got my airplane ticket way back then, I went to traffic school. The guy teaching traffic school told me that I should have gone to traffic court because both the officer that writes the ticket and the one that was in the plane have to show up and there's a good chance that one or the other won't be able to make it.

I have no idea how it works these days though.

Doesn't seem like using CHP aircraft would be cost-effective. They probably spend more money fueling up the planes and paying the pilots salary than they make catching speeders. Thats just my guess, I could be wrong though.

I would just go to court to see if both guys show up. And make sure you at least ask for a fine reduction, worked for me last time I had a ticket from CHP (non airplane).

On a busy highway pulling cars over 4 or 5 at a time? $100-150 per ticket? Seems like it would add up pretty quick

^ they probably get 3 people pulled over an hour on average. so yeah $1000? probably $200 hr for the plane and pilot, but still its a pretty dumb concept...

why cant one CHP hide on a grassy hill and radar someone coming over it, and radio it to the guy down the road? If i were a CHP i would pwn all of you lol.

They really suck at hiding it seems.

I might try and get it reduced. But its only 80 in a 65, so it will be $300? reduced to $200 and traveling to Pleasanton isnt worth it, especially since they might bring video evidence to court, they take video now, and would probably take 1 second to whip out their CHP ipod to hand to the judge
aka i wasnt really going with the flow of traffic

That's what UAVs will be used for. Just set it up to hover over a hot spot and pull over the speeders on the ground.

I am in a huge hurry and cannot elaborate but this is dead on correct. If the ground officer did not see you commit the crime, then he cannot legally cite you for it. This is defined by CVC as a speed trap. Most people think it's for real and just pay the fine. If he does cite you, BOTH officers must appear in court which is most likely not going to happen. Thanks to ticketassassin, I have gotten through this 2x with a case dismissed. If I can find my Statement of Facts from one of those, I will send it to you. Good luck either way!

Years ago, I got timed by a CHP plane as I passed under the 37 interchange on 101 north doing 98mph. By the time I exited 101 at Rowland there was already a cruiser glued to my rear.

The 5 is an awesome highway for flying low. We left Stockton at 9pm and got into Ventura around 1:30 a.m., including slowing down across Hwy. 126.

My sister got caught by a CHP airplane maybe 10 years ago going to Reno on 80. Just before the Nevada border.

I got caught on 101 just before Morgan Hill by a CHP airplane about 1 month ago... While I was on my way to the courthouse to fight my wife's BS speeding in a construction zone ticket! (Which we lost after the cop totally lied.) The CHP who ticketed me specifically said that he isnt the one giving me the ticket, it was the officer in the airplane.
