We also say you pay for the helmet as much as you value your head.

No helmet = 0 value for your head.
you want to pay $50 for a cheap helmet off ebay be my guest.

also I like the local shops since I can test the helmet and cycle gear has an exchange option if the helmet does not feel right. Now how can test/wear a helmet if you buy on line? Same goes with motorcycle gear (jackets etc..) how can you know the fit and finish if you never put one on?

cheers and buy and think smart.

Nick

good point nick... thats why, i try on stuff at road rider.. and try and find it online to save money... its up to the rider.... personally i love my arai rx7 corsair due to its light weight... that and the x-11 are 2 of my favorite helmets... i understand not all people have the money for those types of helmets... but again, its also about comfort and how much you ride.... kinda like how any car will get you from point a to point b, the difference is like between civic and a benz.... after dot/snell approval which most helmets are, the rest of the price is just about fit, comfort, and noise...

what kind of helmet are you looking for? I've got a yellow shoei helmet size small up for sale. I only wore it a few times, then my dad made me sell my bike. I've got pictures if you're interested.

Those are pretty cool helmets with race-replica graphics, but you can save yourself at LEAST $150 by going with a solid color.

And the protection is the same as those with the flashy graphics. It's a totally unnecessary cost.

I haven't shopped for helmets in awhile, but here's a breakdown for quality DOT/SNELL certified helmets:

$100-175: HJC, AGV. Both good, quality helmets. The interior liner isn't as nice as a Shoei/Arai/Suomy, but it's not awful. I bought my girlfriend an HJC helmet for $150 and was surprised how good it was. It really gave my Shoei a run for the money (at more than double the cost).

$300-$350: Solid color Shoei/Arai helmets. Very good fit/finish, quality materials. Fancy sticker that says Shoei/Arai.

$400 and up: Race replica helmets. Same quality as the solid color helmets of the same brand, but with flashy graphics. All you're really paying for is the bling.

That said, I've got a Miguel Duhamel race replica. Completely unnecessary, but fun.

Thank you

I don't think anybody asked, but have you tried on any helmets yet?
Do you know exactly what size and model fit you the best?

if not, then do NOT buy anything without trying on at LEAST 5 different types of helmets to get the right fit.

I know I wear a size small but I get the best fit with an Arai Corsair or Quantum helmet. Suomies fit me ok and Shoeis just do not work on my head.

Everyone has a different head shape so you owe it to yourself to get the right fit.

That being said..once I found the best helmets for my head, I found a guy on e-bay that sells brand new helmets at pretty good prices
http://stores.ebay.com/HelmetShopper...enameZL2QQtZkm

I got a nice Arai for WAY less than anywhere else

+1. I have a Shoei shaped head.

BTW, if anyone is interested, Motorcycle magazine just printed a report after impact testing many popular brands of lid. The resulting g-forces and the DOT vs Snell/BSI issues made for some interesting (and unexpected) reading.
