i wouldnt bother to repair them. Even if you remove old heatspread and apply new paste with bolts and washers with the additional of reflowing the GPU, it'll still overheat and rrod again after a few months hence you see the 90 days warranty on craigslist. The best thing to do is put 199 aside and order a new 4gb slim from amazon. The new heatsink/fan layout is 100 times better than what it was before and using lower wattage cpu/gpu combo.
Or if youre really frugal and dont mind not having a wifi adapter built in, go on craigslist and find yourself a jasper original x360 (manufacture date should start mid 08 until now)

But this will also only last for so long and you can only do it so many times.
I used to buy RRoD xboxs on CL for cheap, fix them and sell them for $80-100. Thats how I got mine. It worked fine for 8 months then red ringed again. Fixed it, and the only way it would play was if it was not in the case and I had a floor fan blowing cold air all over it
edit: here it is haha

My launch 360 RRoD right before Halo 3 came out and Microsoft told me that they couldn't fix it time so they just sent me a brand new box. I haven't had any problems since *knock on wood*

its nice MS sometimes replaces the dvd drive to accompany the older board, but whats a good dvd drive for when you cant even boot up to the dashboard when it red rings?

lol,
true..
however, i KNOW the ps3 is cool, for everything but games.
i have both systems. ps3 is just my bluray player. the controller ergonomics shows its age, 360 controller >>> ps3. online experience of course is not even close. and all the games!!
i would not buy a used 360 unless you know what to look for. if its those first batches from launch, most likely they have or will RROD, i think the first one that had the HDMI port "should" be safe from it.
and yes I did have a launch 360, that RROD, system was just that much better than my ps3 for gaming i got another one, at least the revised one.
