depending why u want to stay away from nextel. Not fair to say cus its part of sprint not to go for them. As a company they are still separate just share services. I know I had them both.

Sprints 4G network is PCS (3G) + WiMax...My current Sprint 3G connection is typically 800 kbs...My typical Verizon is around 300 kbs (around 500 in SF though) and my typical T-Mobile is also around 300-400 kbs.
Sprints 4G is around 3 Mbs...that's WAYYY better, but it's only available from Nextel towers. Why you are down on them because they have some Nextel towers is beyond me.
No other carrier will have a 4G solution yet, because the telecom 4G equipment is 2 more years out...so right now, if speed is your thing, and the ultimate price for unlimited voice/data of $99 (no overages), Sprint wins.
I do not work for Sprint - but all of the cell carriers, even the little ones like Cricket, are my customers.

^ you are about 50/50 on what you just said, Dan Hessie is the guy that bought sprint about 3 years ago. He is dumping all his own money into to company to try to get them back on their feet. So far it is not working at all. If the Palm Pre keeps doing bad like it is sprint and palm will fall soon. Also last year Sprint had over 50,000 people leave a day! They went to AAt and Verison.True Sprint does have the "first" 4G network, but ATT is also working on something that is gonna make 4g look like old school DSL.

Talk to me about the unlocked I-Phone
I have seen lots of software out there to do it, but how would it work with the Verizon network and do I set it up?
I have carried a Nextel for work for the last 4 years using several different phones. So many black spots in the bay area it's disgusting.

I know there are a few cell-phone guys on here.
Verizon has really pissed me off with their unwillingness to help me with the crappy Samsung Glyde they sold me; I'm considering changing companies.
I need a smartphone, but am not willing to put up with a Blackberry. Big priorites:

Verizon has made me jump through hoops to get the phone replaced all 6 times.
Then they stuck me with my ex's termination fee and in no way would help me.
They also kept double charging me every time I had the phone replaced and I HAD to front the bill while waiting for a refund for next month ($240 phone bill isn't fun).
I am probably going to be going to Sprint in January when my contract is up and paying the small termination fee for my ex's phone line.
I tired out the Palm Pre last night. Loved it. Gonna get it.

It is a GSM Phone, meaning it takes a SIM card. Verizon/Sprint use a CDMA network, which uses a code on the phone ( IMEI I believe ) Unlocked I-Phones only work on networks that use SIM cards....... That's why most unlocked phones use SIM cards. Just switch the card to the unlocked phone and it works out of the box. And I know this works. Using a T-Mo SIM on an unlocked ATT Palm Treo 650

Sprint = Nextel. Same company
My iPhone is shockingly durable. I drop it all teh time and it still works. Also, Ive taken it back to the apple store a couple of times and they've replaced it for free.
There is no other choice in my mind
(maybe the Pre)

That is not entirely true. I bought an iPhone for my sister for her birthday and yes, while the special price on it is $99 - you are stuck with the tax on the ENTIRE RETAIL PRICE.
And Apple puts retail in at $560~ you get slammed with: $53 in taxes.
So that $99 phone just cost you $152. Pray you don't get a screen protector; otherwise it's almost $200.
I was thinking of going to the iPhone route but I simply detest Apple and it's monopolistic tendencies when it comes to proprietary soft/hardware - no third party software and no third party memory cards or anything like that. It lacks flexibility and adaptability which I demand in my electronics.
Plus with AT&T if I want unlimited phone, data and txt - it's a whopping $150/month.
Sprint on the other hand is $107 for the same coverage.
While $43 a month may not seem like much - it's $516 a year that I could be saving or going to something else.

I have Verizon for work, use a Blackberry Curve...don't see what the hype is.
Personally I've been a Sprint customer for almost 10 years. My last 5 phones have been "smart phones', recently upgraded to the Palm Treo Pro (sorry but again...I cant fall in line with the hype on the Palm Pre). If I drop calls its because I have my phone set to strict anti-roaming. Never any surprises on my bills, kindergarten easy to upgraded phones (only paid $100 for Treo Pro), and the insurance is cheap/totally worth it.
