Exclamation CEL code P0440

My car threw this code earlier today and I had it read / cleared at MPJ. Code was:

Evaporative Emissions Control System Malfunction
(Evap Purge)

Edit, this is a 99 RS w/ catback and K&N filter

So does anybody know what this really means or what I need to do to get it fixed? Thanks for any help.

-Jeff

I think it means you need to put your gas filler cap on.

I believe Ryan (wrx ish) has that problem regardless of how tight his gas cap is on. He may have some insight into the problem.

Doh my CEL came back again yesterday while out on a drive. Last night I disconnected the battery and reconnected it this morning... CEL still there. I'll probably get it scanned again just to make sure its pulling the same code. And my gas cap has been securley tighetned lol.

Yep still runs great. Yesterday took a drive across Dumbarton Bridge > 101N > Woodside > HWY 1S > HWY 17N > 880N > Home. The CEL didn't come on till I was halfway down Highway 1 towards 17.

Ok wtf!! CEL still on when I got home 10min ago but now the car is idling at 1000rpms. The only way I could get it back down to normal of 500rpms is to push down on the lever for the cable on the right side in the engine bay. Every time push the lever down then rev up a bit it still goes back to 1000rpms. I tried adjusting the cable but it didn't help whatsoever. What the heck is going on here???

evap purge sounds to me like the purge solenoid circuit. you definetly wont pass a smog test, and you probably just need a new purge solenoid.

Thanks, I'll have to check with Carlsen about how much a new one of those will be. But aside from that my car is idling 500rpm too much so if I go drive the car the rpms will go +500 on every shift. I'm gonna need this fixed tomorrow since I need to make it to class on Wednesday. Any ideas what to do... its pretty important that I can at least drive the car.

Strange thing, I started my car today and let it warm up to operating temp and it stayed idling at 500rpms instead of getting stuck at 1000rpms, stayed even after revving. After that I went by MPJ to get the CEL scanned/cleared but it showed no code. This is pretty confusing I'm not sure if theres something wrong with my car or not
