Caught in an avalanche (head cam video)

This is a video of a skier in Alaska who got caught in an avalanche (and saved) while wearing a head cam.

That why you won't ever see me, skiing, snowboarding, skydiving, bungee jumping, hell I don't even like flying in planes unless I have to. I feel like your just tempting fate, no thanks. I'll bet that dudes life flashed before his eyes, all that for a few seconds of adrenaline?

Crazy, that guy got REALLY lucky. I kind of wish I hadn't watched it though... It practically gave me an anxiety attack, lol... I hate enclosed spaces, and I would FREAK out if I was caught in that position.

What's an Avalung? Some sort of breathing device that skiers use to breathe in case of an avalanche? How does it work?

Wow, this is the first video that I have seen like this. It really gives a perspective. More of a reason to get an avalung. Basically an Avalung is a device that helps move the CO2 away from your breathing area and allows you to breathe good oxygen for longer. the breathing cavity is at your chest and distributes over a larger surfaces area and exhales it in a different area. They have had cases where people have survived for over an hour in an avalanche when wearing one. This is up on my list to buy before this season starts.

As for me, this gives a real life feeling as to what can happen and why to ALWAYS carry and avalanche beacon in the backcountry. I ride backcountry and NEVER go without the beacon. This is why this guy was found within a couple mins. If found and unburied within 5 mins like this guy was, your survival rate is something like 90 percent or so. Beyond that, it drops dramatically. If he wasn't wearing one, his percentage of surviving would have dropped quick. Well, and beyond that, never without one with a person that has one and trust. I do not like putting my life in other people's hands, but if I do, it has to be with someone I can depend on to find me in time.

Thanks for the video. I would have freaked out once I saw the shooting cracks below me.

that's all i could think about, after i read the "but if i do"

on a serious note, it's good to see how fast his team responded after the avalanche, makes me want to get a beacon when/if i make it out there this season.
