Car Info: 2014 Subaru XV (Crosstrek)
In reality I'm looking for something that is affordable, good on gas, and not super duper on performance, but not the very low end end end end.
Subaru Impreza hatch is affordable, isn't it?

The new CVT should be good, as long as you can drive like a normal commuter. It's definitely a massive improvement over the previous generation Impreza in terms of fuel efficiency.

No way the FB20 motor will get any real awards for performance. Doubt it'll be a gas guzzler either.

And if you want/need extra ground clearance for off-roading or snow, the XV Crosstrek is a viable option. Also, the XV Crosstrek is rated for towing, so if you intend to tow trailers, the XV Crosstrek can do it.

Car Info: Whatever The Lot Provides ;)
Nissan Versa Base. Good enough for CarQuest/WorldPac. Just sayin.

Did you look at a Focus ST yet? If so, how was it?

Have you looked at a Honda CR-Z or a Toyota Matrix?
