Well if your mechanic is solely basing it on the fact there is orange peels, sounds like hes a moron. Subies are notorious for it. And there paint quality is junk so welcome to the club.
If it's been repainted there should be other signs for him to find or lack there of.

i worked at NUMMI back when they were still pooping out a few hundred corollas and tacomas a day. there are many reasons cars get repainted before they leave the factory - and most of them involve sharp tools or forklifts. after a while it seemed like a miracle every time a car would start and drive away from the end of the assembly line under its own power...or they wouldn't and would get pushed over to the rework bays for a little pep talk and impact adjustment to get them out the door and off to their new rental fleet.

If paint is your issue and it's really bothering you that much, get rid of the car and buy a brand new German car where the paint is nice.
Like others have posted Subarus are lacking in the paint department along with wheel bearing department.

the vin says its aspen white which is the color on the car
the only thing i can think of is it being keyed everywhere since i doubt if it got into an accident that dented every panel to the point that they all needed to be repainted or replaced then i think the cost of fixing is more than the car (truely salvage)

+1 My car was repainted and repaired, but no records of the body work at all.
