Car & Driver - Vishnu, Cobb, and Millen tuner comparo
The *September 2003 issue of Car & Driver features a tuner comparo that the magazine refers to as the Superfour Challenge. Tuner shops submitted four-cylinder cars for testing on a designated track layout at California Speedway.
Each track run includes (start) 0 to 60 mph, 0 to 100 mph, 1/4 mile E.T., road course segment, 100 to 130 mph, and 130 to 0 mph (end).
Comparison is divided into two categories: FWD (front-wheel drive) and RWD/AWD (rear-wheel drive/all-wheel drive, although C&D magazine refers to it as 4-wheel drive).
In the RWD/AWD category, Vishnu Performance, Cobb Tuning, and Rhys Millen Racing all put on a good showing, while Comptech USA's badazz Honda S2000 took top honors at this event.
Cobb's WRX suffered from several teething problems after having rebuilt the car after it was damaged at another event. It's road course times were good but its acceleration seemed off the pace from previous tests. Still, it finished in 3rd place behind Millen's EVO and the S2000.
The Vishnu-tuned EXED-equipped EVO VIII Stage 1 matched the S2000's road course time and beat its 1/4 mile time and braking from 130 mph (by just 3 feet). Nice performance from the few mods done to this car.
There was a wide range of vehicle modifications to the RWD/AWD category, as was also notable the price variance amongst the tested - the Vishnu EVO Stage 1 cost $36,923 as tested while the most expensive was the Cobb Tuning WRX entry at $86,655. Comptech's S2000 cost $68,386 as tested.
