Damn, might have to pick up a Glock 20/21 for that conversion kit
OP, if your interested in that lasermax laser that replaces the recoil rod like C89ZX7R mentioned for the Glocks, its also made for Sigs. Not sure what else though. My dad has one on his Sig 220 .45ACP which also has the flashlight attachment and is his home defense weapon (besides the shotgun ).

Car Info: Cage and Slicks and Wing OH MY!!
I shoot a .40 cal as my issued weapon. I hit headshots from 35 yeards all day long.
And that isnt steady shooting, or takink my time.
Thats three plus shots within 5 seconds.
Its all in the training.
Secondly, you talked about driving home and burglars running out the back door. Do you plan on carrying your piece in your car? Im 100% pro-gun, but it seems like you want it for the wrong reasons. home defense is one thing, but if you leave it at home... guess what the burglars are going to take with them.... and when you arrive home unarmed..... guess what they have waiting.

IMHO a lazer on a handgun is pretty useless; in the heat of a battle you aren't gonna look for the dot.
I would probably be looking at a Springfield XD or a Glock. They are on par for dependability both have lifetime warranty. I personally like the XD more, but at that level of quality its more personal preference than "what's better". Go hold both.
If you need to go a little more budget, look at a Sig Sauer P6. You can find these as German police surplus for ~$300. Very high quality for the money
Caliber could be debated all day;
9mm is traditionally the cheapest handgun round. They are hand to get right now, but so is all ammo. I tend to recommend this caliber for newbies as it is easy to control and being inexpensive you can practice a lot.
.40 Cal - standard police round. just slightly more expensive than 9mm. Good stopper, have a odd jerk to them when fired.
.45ACP - the granddaddy. If I was gonna be in a confrontation this would be the round I wanted. Big, heavy, and predictable. The downside, expensive Expect to pay $.30/round on a good day.
.357 Magnum - this is the round everyone seems to forget about. Really only chambered for revolvers (yes there are exceptions). According to the FBI. this has been the best man-stopper available for 40+ years. They are very fast, and very well developed. But again expensive.
