Can I Have Your Opinion On This Situation?

Just wanted to get your opinion on this.

Someone recently won some stuff I put up on eBay. The person paid me today but it was in the form of an eCheck through PayPal, which is basically like writing me a check online which means I have to wait til September 1st for the payment to clear.

Everything was going ok communication-wise, friendly banter and all. When I found out the payment was through an eCheck, I basically told the person: "Ok, I'm going to hold off on shipping these to you until this eCheck clears." This person replies back blasting me for waiting for the payment to clear because it delayed shipping (these are concert tickets by the way) and that the whole point of PayPal is to get me the payment immediately so that I can ship the product ASAP.

So I stayed calm and nicely told this person that I understand their frustration but when we deal with product and the amount of cash involved I would like to take all precautions and if necessary I will upgrade to Next Day shipping at my expense. And this person seems very very nice and I have no doubt that the payment will clear. But I just wanna be safe.

I still cannot understand why this person blew up on me..So am I wrong in all of this? Or...........

You're right. You handled the situation appropiately and everything seemed to work out. So I'm trying to understand the dilema?

If he wanted the tickets so fast why would he pay with something he knows takes time to clear?

with the recent luck people here have been having with online person-to-person transactions i think you went about this the proper way. i'm sure this person is honest. if anything his initial reaction was probably from offense on the fact that you questioned his form of payment. if he had kept giving you a hard time after you offered to ship overnight at your own expense than i'd be skeptical on his intent.

Rule number 1 when dealing with eBay : Everyone is trying to screw you, protect yourself

even if you are overly cautious, there is nothing wrong with that. He used an eCheck so its his problem. You were very nice on offering next day shipping, he should be thrilled. Never trust anyone over the intraweb.

on that note.. anyone want to buy a bridge ?

Nothing wrong with what you did.

For complaining, ship them a photocopy of the tickets and act like it's the real thing.

In my current job I deal with the public all day long. Many people don't understand that sometimes there is a process for their request. If this person could not follow your specific directions for a fast easy transaction then they have to deal with it. Considering EBAY and the feedback issue I can see why you offered to overnight the tickets. But other than that it is a business transaction, sometimes you have to deal with the patient (sarcasm) public.

What are the tickets for?

I looked at PayPal's site and couldn't find a satisfying explanation of what their eCheck option does. Since it draws from the member's bank account just like the 'standard' PayPal payment, what is the purpose other than to possibly introduce a post-dated delay to the transaction? In other words, why would that person use eCheck?

As long as you were courteous and professional in your correspondence I think that using caution and protecting your own interests should come first with any online transaction. You are dealing with strangers, not your neighbors or buddies at work.

thats weird because with paypal you can send money where it deducts it direct from your checking account. so whats the point of writing an echeck?

I just recently got two eChecks via Paypal. They both cleared, but it did add additional time to the transaction as I didn't want to ship anything until the check cleared, just as you did. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

the only thing i can think of is that this guy banks with a credit union. credit union transactions usually take an extra day or two to clear. :shrugs: that's my only possible reason as to why this guys eCheck is taking longer than yours.

Ill just say again what everyone already has. You handled it well. Honestly with things like these, you really need to just watch your own ***. I had a transaction that wasnt even on the interenet go kinda sour, thankfully things worked out because it was for my damn Ver 7 STi drivetrain, but i ended up canceling my check to protect myself because the terms of our agreement were not met and things had changed, I was not gonna receive what I had agreed to pay for. You have every right to hold the tickets until it clears. You also have every right to refuse sale to this person if you choose to. So just relax, take a deep breath, and take all the **** this person gives you with a grain of salt, finish the transaction and enjoy the money.

Well, this person used an eCheck because he/she said that when they tried to use their credit card PayPal was giving some errors.
