Camp Site

Scott's Flat Lake in Grass Valley/ Nevada City is very nice.
Pine Trees & Shade every where, Camp sites stay clean since there's a bed of pine needles. Hot showers and bathrooms, Open fire pits allowed if you use their fire wood. Some places won't allow any fires. There is a fee I'm sure per night. Nice open lake.

Actually I believe the fire is on the opposite side of the Desolation Wilderness, but you're probably right, in that there are going to be better places with less smoke elsewhere this week.
If you want a camp site without a reservation this time of year you'd better plan to drive a good 4-5 hours first.

Though, you could get to Loon Lake if you really wanted to. It is a beautiful spot. I've spent a lot of time there.

Cal Trans shows 50 as being open now, but I do remember it being closed yesterday...
But that was on your side of the summit, shouldn't be a problem getting to Loon Lake via Ice house road from the west

I like undeveloped campsites and I usually go to either Bear Valley and Pinecrest Lake, though they also have some nice pay-to-camp sites if that's your thing. In fact I just got back from Pinecrest Lake a couple weeks ago, and it was beautiful there.
PS: I'd say 50-60% of all cars that I saw there were Subarus, pretty crazy.
