If you go up ice house road off 50 far enough you hit the start of the Rubicon. Really cool free camping. Probably way too cold still.

Ice House is all snow still.

Peninusla Campground on the backside of Folsom lake is pretty tight... I wouldnt be shooting out there but you can easily be somewhere you can within about 5 minutes.

There is also a really cool place off of Secret Town Rd (by Alta). 7 mile long non-county maintained road that leads to what used to be a HUGE river and is now just stream due to the PGE powerhoue that the road leads too.

BEST place for shooting and I know serveral people who have camped out there too.

secret town road alta ca - Google Maps

It is called Haul Road (long winding road just to the right of the "A" marker) and I have been going here for 7+ years. It was originally recommened to me by a CHP officer in Colfax when I was looking for a safe place to shoot.

It is also a cool place to drive around... what used to be a huge river bed is now just a HUGE area of smooth river rock.

Note that the area I am talking about is right where Haul Rd Crosses the river. You can keep going and merge onto other logging/PGE roads that take you to other lakes/streams where NOBODY would be.

i was invited to go camping here around this area a few years ago.

Google Maps

mild off road. IIRC a volvo AWD station made it here and had a hard time going back uphill (lots of wheel spin) but did make it out.

nice lake.

i'm not sure if it's BLM land or state owned. i did bring a gun for protection though, not to target shoot.

but we were there alone and could have done some plinking, if we wanted too...

No lake but a neat place to camp is in the middle of the loop. Stayed there for a week shooting and had a ranger come tell us our firing range we made looked nice.

***Edit***

Just went out to secret town road and Nevada Irrigation Distric has gated it right at the river crossing.

You can still go there to access the water and fish... but technically no guns past the gate.

There were two Nevada County Sheriffs out there on Saturday when we showed up. They said that I was fine to shoot anywhere on my side of the gate... which I did.

Might be time to explore some other roads that are other there.
